Hannah and Archer’s Relationship Update Following Chicago Med Finale
Chicago Med’s season 11 finale wrapped up with a joyful ending for Hannah and Archer—though could it be fleeting?
Warning: Spoilers ahead for season 11, episode 21 of Chicago Med.
“I don’t see her ready to let anything go in her professional [life],” Jessy Schram, who portrays Dr. Hannah Asher, shared exclusively with Us Weekly when asked if Hannah is prepared to relinquish control after the arrival of her daughter, Mabel, in the season finale aired on Wednesday, May 13.
The 40-year-old actress emphasized that Hannah is particularly focused on “not losing anywhere, anything,” having put in significant effort towards her sobriety, career, and relationships.
This need for control will carry into season 12, impacting Hannah’s relationship with Dr. Dean Archer (Steven Weber), who is not only the father of her child but also her colleague. He reminds her in the episode, “I love you Hannah and I have for a long time.”
“I feel like she’s letting go to the extent that she can now be in ‘the now’ now that the baby’s here,” Schram hinted at what lies ahead for Hannah and Archer. “Archer has expressed his feelings for her. She’s working through her own emotions—she’s figuring them out. So, at this moment, Hannah may still have some controlling tendencies.”
She added that Hannah is “open to seeing what can unfold,” which marks a shift from her behavior in previous seasons.
“She’s ready to be present and see what ‘the now’ brings,” Schram noted, suggesting that the arrival of their daughter could pave the way for a deeper romance between Hannah and Archer, especially given the dramatic circumstances surrounding the delivery involving a hospital lockdown and Archer being held at gunpoint by a prisoner. (Fortunately, Archer managed to arrive just in time for the birth.)
Chicago Med showrunner Allen MacDonald told Us that the finale features a moment “where it may just be for a moment in TV land, but, like, [Hannah] is in a moment of peace at the end.”
This scene unfolded after Archer declared his love for Hannah, to which she replied with a “thank you.”
Hannah then kissed Archer while gazing at their daughter, who lay swaddled beside them. Archer gazed back and forth from Hannah to the baby, but she remained focused on their little girl.
“It wasn’t accidental that he looks at her while she’s looking at the baby, and she doesn’t look back; she smiles at him but keeps her attention on the baby,” MacDonald explained. “There’s a reason for her not looking back, yet the kiss is genuine. So, I think it’s a bit ambiguous.”
He joked, “There are a lot of emotions stirring. It’s all simmering and could boil over soon.”
“Hannah’s letting herself be present for now,” Schram reiterated, while MacDonald teased that their happiness might be temporary.
The showrunner revealed to Us that season 12 will introduce new challenges for Hannah and Archer. “There are bumps in the road ahead,” MacDonald affirmed. “And we aimed to capture a sense of ambiguity in that final scene.”
He hinted, “They both have genuine feelings for each other, but they’re not entirely in sync.”
When asked if viewers might see Hannah and Archer’s home life outside the hospital, MacDonald remained playful. “If you mention home, that suggests they might be living together. So, I mean, no comment,” he chuckled.
Chicago Med will be back for season 12 on NBC in fall 2026.
