Heartstopper Forever Movie Features Surprising Recap with Olivia Colman

The Heartstopper film is just around the corner, but it will have some changes following the announcement of a significant role being recast.

On Friday, April 17, Netflix announced that Kit Connor and Joe Locke will reprise their roles along with Yasmin Finney, Will Gao, Corinna Brown, Kizzy Edgell, Tobie Donovan, Rhea Norwood, and others. The film will also introduce new cast members: Derek Jacobi and Anna Maxwell Martin. The latter will portray Nick’s mother, Sarah, after Olivia Colman was unable to return for Heartstopper Forever, set to premiere in 2026.

“I am thrilled that so many familiar faces from Heartstopper are back for the film finale. It’s also an honor to bring in two new talents to the Heartstopper family — two icons of British theatre and screen — Anna Maxwell Martin as Sarah Nelson and Derek Jacobi in a cameo role,” declared creator Alice Oseman in a statement.

Oseman addressed the unexpected casting change, stating, “As I began crafting the Heartstopper Forever screenplay, I recognized how crucial it was for Sarah, Nick’s mum, to be part of this story. Since season 1, we’ve seen the strong bond Nick shares with his mother — she’s one of the few individuals he can turn to during crises. Although we managed to adjust the narrative in season 3 to keep Sarah out of sight, it felt illogical for her to be absent in this concluding chapter, especially with the emotional challenges Nick encounters.”

The statement continued: “Unfortunately, Olivia Colman could not join us for the film, so we faced the difficult choice to recast the role instead of omitting the character altogether. We are immensely grateful for Olivia’s beautiful portrayal of Sarah in seasons 1 and 2 of Heartstopper, particularly during pivotal moments like Nick’s coming out as bisexual, and we know her performance will remain cherished by every Heartstopper fan.”

Oseman expressed her enthusiasm for Martin, saying, “We are thrilled to welcome the remarkable Anna Maxwell Martin as Sarah in Heartstopper Forever. Anna perfectly captures Sarah’s kind and relatable spirit, and it was enchanting to see her interact with Kit Connor during filming. I eagerly anticipate Heartstopper fans experiencing her portrayal of Sarah Nelson.”

Heartstopper, adapted from Oseman’s graphic novels, follows high school athlete Nick (Connor) as he navigates his sexuality after forming a bond with fellow student Charlie (Locke). The series premiered in 2022 and ran for three seasons.

As reported by Netflix’s Tudum, the upcoming film will depict Nick and Charlie tackling the trials of a long-distance relationship, with Nick preparing for university and Charlie seeking independence at school. Additionally, the arcs of other characters featured in the series will be resolved.

Connor and Locke will also act as executive producers for the film. Oseman penned the screenplay for the movie based on the forthcoming Heartstopper: Volume 6 novel, while director Wash Westmoreland has already completed production.

Heartstopper is presently available for streaming on Netflix.
