How Jodie Turner-Smith and Joshua Jackson Discuss Their Split with Their Child

Jodie Turner-Smith and her former spouse Joshua Jackson are navigating unfamiliar territory when it comes to discussing their divorce with their daughter.

“I’m a child of divorce myself, and so is my ex-husband,” Turner-Smith, 39, mentioned during the June 29 episode of Hoda Kotb’s “Joy 101” podcast. “It has always been essential to consider the language we will use when talking about this with our daughter, as it’s now her reality.”

She added, “We are learning too, and we don’t always get it right, but the intention is to have two homes filled with love. I’m like, ‘You have two houses, girl.’”

Turner-Smith filed for divorce from Jackson, 48, in October 2023 after four years of marriage, and their split was finalized in May 2025. The former couple shares a daughter, Juno, who was born in April 2020.

For Turner-Smith, the “challenging” aspect of managing the separation is “navigating the conversation” with her daughter.

“You have to balance being age-appropriate and child-focused in these discussions,” Turner-Smith elaborated. “But it’s also vital to be honest, so she can understand what this means.”

The actress revealed that books have become her “go-to tool” for these discussions.

“I read her lots of books about divorce, explaining what it entails, what changes to expect, and what shouldn’t happen,” Turner-Smith shared. “Children’s literature has proven quite helpful as well.”

Jodie Turner-Smith offered fans a rare glimpse into her journey as a mother, discussing her experience coparenting with ex-husband Joshua Jackson. “It’s an adjustment period for anyone after a split, especially since you’re used to being with your child constantly,” Turner-Smith, 38, told Glamour in an interview.

Although Turner-Smith and Jackson finalized their divorce last year, their custody battle is still ongoing.

Us Weekly reported in April that the former couple engaged a private judge to manage all final custody arrangements, including post-judgment issues, through March 4, 2029.

Court documents obtained by Us at the time indicated that the judge would oversee future custody changes and child support matters.

Turner-Smith and Jackson agreed to share joint legal and physical custody of their daughter in their divorce settlement, with the Dawson’s Creek star responsible for child support. However, tensions arose when they disagreed on their daughter’s school choice.

Us reported in October 2025 that they intended to resolve the custody agreement outside of court.

“[Turner-Smith and Jackson] are currently negotiating a custody judgment,” documents acquired by Us at that time stated. “The parties will return to the private judge they hired to resolve any disagreements regarding the proposed custody judgment.”
