How Many Spinoffs of Grey’s Anatomy Existed Before the Texas Series?

ABC has announced a new Grey’s Anatomy spinoff that will take place in rural Texas. But just how many follow-up series have been created so far?

The original medical drama, which debuted in 2005, revolves around the personal and professional experiences of surgical interns, residents, and attendings at the fictional Seattle Grace Hospital, also known as Seattle Grace Mercy West Hospital or Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital.

Known for its unexpected twists that frequently lead to cast departures, Grey’s Anatomy has enjoyed considerable success, resulting in several spinoffs such as Private Practice and Station 19.

In May 2026, it was reported that ABC secured a follow-up series to Grey’s Anatomy, set in rural West Texas. The new show will be cocreated, written, and executive produced by Shonda Rhimes alongside Meg Marinis, the show’s current showrunner. Furthermore, Grey’s Anatomy star Ellen Pompeo will also serve as an executive producer for this upcoming series, which is slated to premiere in midseason 2027.

“I am beyond thrilled to broaden the Grey’s Anatomy universe,” stated Marinis. “This venture will introduce fresh characters and narratives that encapsulate the essence, emotion, and connection that audiences have cherished from Grey’s for over two decades—all set against the backdrop of my home state, Texas. I am incredibly thankful to Shonda Rhimes for crafting this vibrant world, and I feel privileged to contribute to it.”

The new show will feature a brand-new ensemble of doctors, but it may maintain ties to the original series through one or more characters—potentially Debbie Allen’s Catherine Fox.
