Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser from Dutton Ranch Discuss Showrunner Departure
Yellowstone‘s Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser have finally addressed the recent upheaval in their Dutton Ranch spinoff following a surprising change in showrunners.
“Showrunners come and go frequently,” Hauser, 51, shared during a joint interview with The Hollywood Reporter. “This industry demands adaptability.”
He went on to say: “We’ve been in this business for quite some time. Changes are a part of the process. People transition.”
Reilly, 48, echoed his sentiments, commenting, ” We concluded [season one] beautifully with Chad. We wrapped this season up together. Making the show was challenging yet deeply rewarding. The same goes for Yellowstone.”
Looking to the future, the actress emphasized a positive outlook. “If something is worth doing, it’s worth doing well,” she stated. “We’re all creative individuals collaborating, and I take great pride in that.”
Just prior to the show’s premiere in June, Chad Feehan was leading the Yellowstone spinoff.
Us Weekly later confirmed Feehan’s departure as showrunner after an April report indicated that the creator of Lawmen: Bass Reeves had stepped down from Dutton Ranch due to reported tensions with series stars including Hauser and Reilly.
Allegations suggested that both Sheridan and his producing associate David Glasser, alongside the lead actors, were primarily dissatisfied with the production management rather than the scripts themselves.
Executive producer Christina Voros commented on Feehan’s purported firing, stating to ScreenRant in May that he “did an outstanding job creating a world of conflict for Rip and Beth” within the Yellowstone spinoff.
Voros indicated that, regarding the “dynamics of his departure,” she had limited information to offer. She noted that Dutton Ranch had not yet “emerged into the public eye,” making a future without Feehan “beyond” her scope of knowledge.
She expressed appreciation to Feehan and his crew for “developing a universe for these characters to explore.”
Paramount+ has since renewed Dutton Ranch for a second season — though an update about a new showrunner is still pending.
Moreover, Dutton Ranch isn’t the sole Sheridan project that has witnessed showrunner transitions; Lioness, Tulsa King, and Frisco King have also undergone similar changes — with some shows lacking a consistent showrunner across seasons.
Dutton Ranch airs on Paramount+ every Friday.
