Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser Hint at the Future of Dutton Ranch’s Storyline
Yellowstone‘s spinoff Dutton Ranch has recently launched, but discussions about its potential end have already begun.
Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser shared their thoughts on the future of the popular Paramount+ series in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter earlier this month, expressing their eagerness to return for multiple seasons.
“If the writing is good, you never want to hold on too tightly in this industry, right?” Reilly, 48, commented. “We’re very grateful to be here, and if we get a chance to keep creating something we’re proud of, then we’re in. If not, we are both working actors and will be fine.”
Hauser, 51, described the possibility of continuing the series as “pretty cool,” adding, “I believe if the audience continues to respond positively to the show as they have for the last ten years, then I would love to keep entertaining them.”
Paramount+’s acclaimed franchise began with Yellowstone, which premiered in 2018, introducing viewers to the fictional Dutton family. Fans delved into the lives of characters Beth Dutton and Rip Wheeler, whose long-standing relationship has faced numerous challenges, on the popular series. The show concluded in 2024, expanding its universe with Luke Grimes’ CBS show Marshals and Dutton Ranch.
“We haven’t discussed five [seasons]. I think we’re taking it season by season,” Reilly mentioned to the outlet, while Hauser added, “This has been a massive undertaking. We haven’t had any time to really think about it. We literally wrapped filming at the end of March and have been busy promoting the show.”
Reilly hinted at a storyline already shaped for season 2.
“I think we have some ideas about season 2 and where we left off in season 1,” she revealed. “While we can’t discuss the ending, we are truly excited about the direction it takes, and we already have a sense of where to begin, which is thrilling.”
However, season 2 is set to look a bit different, as Us Weekly has confirmed that Chad Feehan will not be returning as showrunner after his work on season 1. Puck News reported earlier that Feehan departed from Dutton Ranch due to alleged tensions with cast members, including Hauser and Reilly.
“Showrunners change all the time,” Hauser told The Hollywood Reporter. “This industry requires adaptability.”
He further noted, “We’ve been in this for a long time. Changes happen. People move forward.”
Reilly echoed a similar sentiment regarding the transition. “It was a challenging but fulfilling show to create,” she expressed. “And so was Yellowstone.”
Looking ahead, the actress chose to remain optimistic. “Ultimately, anything worth creating,” she concluded, “is a collaborative effort, and I’m incredibly proud of that.”
Paramount+ has since renewed Dutton Ranch for season 2 — though no updates on a new showrunner have been provided yet.
Dutton Ranch isn’t the only Sheridan series to experience showrunner changes; Lioness, Tulsa King, and Frisco King have also undergone shifts — not every show has maintained a consistent showrunner from season to season.
Dutton Ranch airs on Paramount+ every Friday.
