Mariska Hargitay and Chris Meloni’s Law & Order Kiss Was Edited Out

Mariska Hargitay revealed a stunning detail about a kiss scene she filmed with Christopher Meloni that was ultimately excluded from Law & Order: SVU.

“We believed this moment deserved to happen, that it could occur if only for a second — and that’s how we captured it,” Hargitay, 62, shared with The Hollywood Reporter on Tuesday, April 28. “We filmed it in a few different ways.”

Hargitay reminisced about series creator and longtime producer Dick Wolf changing his mind regarding the final edit, stating, “Then they had the choice in post-production, and they opted for the near-kiss version instead of the kiss.”

The show’s stars “disagreed” about not including the filmed scene.

“We disagreed because we felt it was deserved and the way it was portrayed was intricate, beautiful, and very human, showcasing the complexities of their relationship and the various ways they are connected,” she elaborated. “[But] ultimately, no matter what I desire, Dick Wolf has the final say.”

Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, which debuted in 1999, introduced Hargitay and Meloni, 65, as partners tackling sex-based crimes in New York. While some fans tuned in weekly for the detectives of the Special Victims Unit, others were hoping to see Olivia Benson (Hargitay) and Elliot Stabler (Meloni) develop a romantic relationship.

Meloni had previously discussed the anticipation for an onscreen romance.

“Guys, we were trying something. I’m not sure it worked, but I won’t elaborate on why. Feel free to form your own opinion,” he told TVLine in 2025. “I know what happened.”

Meloni pointed out that while scenes are shot, actors often don’t know what will finally make it to air.

“We don’t have that control. We put our best foot forward to be truthful with the scenes we’re given,” he continued. “We aim to make it genuine, not overly dramatic. If we do hint at something, at least for me, it’s always done playfully.”

He added: “I think it’s lighthearted, but perhaps you’ve moved on from that, and that’s perfectly valid,” he said. “But honestly, you give us too much credit for the influence we might have over the will-they-won’t-they dynamic.”

During that period, Hargitay reflected on the significant bond between her and Meloni.

“We are profoundly connected,” she stated on the “Call Her Daddy” podcast in 2025. “We are incredibly close. It feels like we’ve faced battles together. We understand each other deeply. We care for one another immensely and have mutual respect.”

She concluded: “We are very comfortable with each other, and we trust each other completely… Whatever he needs, I will always be there for him, and that sentiment is mutual. We’ve been in each other’s lives for 27 years and have grown together.”
