Ransom Canyon Cancelled by Netflix After Its Second Season
Ransom Canyon has officially concluded its run on Netflix with an unexpected cancellation.
On Thursday, September 10, it was revealed that Netflix would not be renewing Ransom Canyon for a third season. According to Deadline, the show was on the brink last year but managed to secure a season 2 renewal, which came more than two months after its premiere.
Season 2, released in July, featured a smaller episode count and some cast changes. The outlet reports that the second season was received more positively from a creative standpoint internally at the streaming service. Nevertheless, Ransom Canyon garnered 4.1 million views in its first week back, marking a 43 percent decline from its season 1 premiere week, which attracted 7.2 million views.
The show’s first season spent four weeks on Netflix’s weekly Top 10, whereas the second season only managed three weeks.
Based on the book series by Jodi Thomas, which centers on a town rife with drama, romance, and hope, Ransom Canyon debuted in April 2025, introducing viewers to the locals of Texas Hill Country. In season 1, Josh Duhamel‘s Staten was coping with two significant losses while exploring his undeniable bond with childhood friend Quinn (Minka Kelly), who also drew the interest of Staten’s brother-in-law and love triangle rival, Davis (Eoin Macken).
Additionally, Yancy (Jack Schumacher) was concealing a secret from Ellie (Marianly Tejada), while the audience grew more invested in a love triangle involving high school students Lucas (Garrett Wareing), Lauren (Lizzy Greene), and Reid (Andrew Liner).
In the second season, characters Davis (Macken), his son Reid (Liner), and Davis’ ex-wife Paula Jo (Meta Golding) were no longer part of the show. Their departure was noted after they played significant roles in the previous season.
Showrunner April Blair hinted at her vision for a potential season 3, which would include several cast changes.
“[There will] definitely [be] new faces,” Blair shared with Us in July. “I really want to explore more about Lucas and Kit’s parents. I feel like we’ve never really addressed that.”
Blair aimed to develop Lucas’ (Wareing) storyline further, expressing, “I really want to introduce someone new to the mix so that Lucas can experience fresh adventures and romance, and just someone fun to liven things up.”
Apart from the Russell family dynamics, Blair was enthusiastic about including more musical elements.
“Perhaps we could introduce another type of musical aspect into our narrative. In season 1, Charley Crockett performed at Gracie’s, and in season 2, we had a grand celebration featuring Jordan Davis and Thomas Rhett,” she explained. “What’s a different way we can weave music into our show? I believe it plays a critical role.”
She continued: “Could we bring in a character who is also a musician? Quinn is constructing this artistic hub; she’s developing Gracie’s and plans to revive the old theater. What does that contribute to the town and the new dynamics?”
Blair suggested that the “possibilities are boundless” for a potential season 3.
