What Transpires Between Staten and Quinn?

Warning: This article contains spoilers for Season One of “Ransom Canyon.”

The first season of “Ransom Canyon” revolves around the will-they-or-won’t-they dynamic between Staten Kirkland and Quinn O’Grady.

This new Netflix Western romantic drama features Josh Duhamel and Minka Kelly as star-crossed lovers set against the backdrop of Texas Hill Country. Following the passing of Staten’s wife, who was also Quinn’s best friend, Staten faces yet another devastating blow with the loss of his son, Randall.

Filled with anger and a thirst for revenge, Staten finds solace in Quinn, who unexpectedly begins dating his former brother-in-law, Davis Collins (Eoin Macken).

Davis, Staten, and Cap Fuller (James Brolin) are leaders of three ranching families embroiled in a fierce struggle for control over their land and legacies.

“Ransom Canyon” draws inspiration from a book series written by Jodi Thomas.

The series finale leaves Staten and Quinn’s relationship in jeopardy, introducing further conflicts for the residents of Ransom Canyon.

Continue reading to find out what transpired at the end of “Ransom Canyon” Season 1 and what Duhamel and Kelly shared with TODAY.com regarding their characters’ futures.

In the season finale, Quinn and Davis end their relationship. Despite knowing it was over before Quinn confirms it, Davis asks her if their bond was ever “real.”

“Yes, it was,” Quinn responds.

Quinn, facing the possibility of closure for her music venue, Gracie’s, must also consider an offer from the New York Philharmonic for a six-month position. When she discloses this to Staten, it doesn’t sit well with him, leading viewers to witness him seemingly end things by the episode’s conclusion.

To sustain her business, Quinn takes the opportunity in New York for some extra finances.

“I appreciate how much interest everyone has in their future,” Kelly tells TODAY.com regarding Quinn and Staten’s storyline. “That’s definitely a positive.”

“On one hand, you want them to be together, but I’m not exactly saying that,” Duhamel shares with TODAY.com. “Yet, I also enjoy the complexity of their situation. There are so many challenges between them that make me feel unworthy of her.”

Duhamel further states that Quinn appears to have “much more clarity” than Staten.

“For Staten to find his way, he needs some personal growth,” he expresses. “I believe there’s still much to explore and resolve between the two.”

Kelly adds that it would be fascinating to witness the continuation of Quinn’s journey as she evolves.

“By the end, she’s beginning to recognize her worth, understanding that it’s acceptable to prioritize herself and follow her desires in life,” Kelly reflects. “It will be intriguing to see how that unfolds in a potential second season.”

Viewers learn that Yancy Grey (Jack Schumacher) is actually the grandson of Cap Fuller. When Cap discovers this fact, he expresses that he will never accept Yancy as family—stemming from the tension that Yancy and Davis intended to take his land.

Following the death of Cap’s son and Yancy’s father, Cap searched for Yancy and his mother, but to no avail. Staten informs Yancy about this history, prompting Yancy to aim to protect his grandfather’s ranch from encroaching developers.

During an appearance on TODAY on April 15, Brolin stated that he was “enamored” with his character’s “misfortunes and his anger.”

“That’s not who I am,” he clarified. “I’m a total optimist. My mother was incredibly kind, and I never learned to negotiate or argue. So playing a character in deep anguish is a refreshing challenge.”

Yancy proposes to Ellie (Marianly Tejada) and asks her to marry him that very night.

Ellie, completely in love with Yancy, agrees to spend her life with him. However, just as she is about to leave for their private ceremony, a woman enters Gracie’s, claiming to be Yancy’s wife.

Staten’s father, Senator Samuel “Sam” Kirkland (Brett Cullen), threatens to remove Staten as the sole trustee of their Double K ranch under the pretext that he is not mentally fit.

Staten accuses his father of harboring jealousy because Sam’s father didn’t leave him the ranch.

In the episode’s climax, Staten challenges Davis for covertly taking his clients. Davis retaliates with insults, leading Staten to punch him. This altercation is revealed to be part of a scheme devised by Davis and Sam, designed to portray Staten as unfit to run the ranch.
