When Was the Last Time Jonathan Taylor Thomas Was Seen After His Acting Hiatus?
Since stepping away from acting, Jonathan Taylor Thomas has made only infrequent public appearances.
Thomas began his career as a child actor, starring in The Bradys at just 9 years old. He later lent his voice to young Simba in The Lion King and captured our hearts as Randy on Home Improvement, alongside Tim Allen, Patricia Richardson, Taran Noah Smith, Zachery Ty Bryan, Richard Karn, and Debbe Dunning.
Even after achieving fame, Thomas chose to leave the beloved series, which aired from 1991 to 1999, to concentrate on his education. In 2000, he enrolled at Harvard University, where he pursued studies in philosophy and history. He graduated from the School of General Studies at Columbia University in 2010.
After a few more television roles in shows like Smallville and 8 Simple Rules, Thomas decided to take a break from the entertainment industry. In 2013, he made a brief comeback, appearing alongside his on-screen father Allen in four episodes of Last Man Standing.
Since then, Thomas has made very few public appearances and has not taken on new roles in television or film. He still maintains a close relationship with his Home Improvement parents and even visited Allen on the set of his new show, Shifting Gears.
“He just came back [to the last episode we filmed]. He showed up on the set,” Allen shared with Us in January 2025. “He’s literally my kid. I raised that kid for eight years on Home Improvement.”

2015
While Thomas has not acted in films since 2005, he returned to television for a four-episode arc on Allen’s sitcom Last Man Standing. There, he played John Baker and also directed three episodes.
2021
In exclusive photos obtained by Us, the actor was seen in Hollywood vaping and walking his dogs. This June 2021 sighting marked the first time Thomas was photographed in almost eight years.
2023
In November 2023, Thomas was spotted near his home in Southern California. He donned a tan Lacoste sweater over a green shirt and denim pants while sipping a drink as he entered a local convenience store.
2026
Richardson provided a delightful surprise glimpse of former co-stars Thomas and Smith more than twenty years after the Home Improvement series finale.
“My other boys ❤️,” Richardson captioned a July 2026 Instagram post.
The actress previously confirmed that she has remained in touch with Thomas, mentioning on a 2024 episode of the “Back to the Best” podcast that “he’s not really interested in acting. He wants to direct and write.”
