What Is PDRN Skincare and Where Does It Come From?
PDRN, or polydeoxyribonucleotide, consists of purified DNA fragments obtained from salmon sperm. This compound is biocompatible with human DNA, allowing skin cells to respond as though it were their own repair signal.
“PDRN stands for polydeoxyribonucleotide, and it essentially consists of purified DNA fragments from salmon sperm. These polynucleotides are compatible with human DNA, meaning our skin cells respond to them like they do with their own repair signals,” Roberta Del Campo, MD, board-certified dermatologist and chief medical officer at Skin Laundry, shared with Byrdie. The extracted sperm undergoes filtration and sterilization before use. While PDRN can also be sourced from certain trout, salmon is the most prevalent choice in skincare.
How Does PDRN Skincare Work on the Skin?
Upon application, PDRN activates adenosine A2A receptors in the skin, initiating a series of regenerative processes linked to collagen production, hydration, and repair. Initially embraced in South Korea, it has been celebrated for its medical and cosmetic healing benefits.
“It stimulates fibroblasts to enhance collagen and elastin production, boosts microcirculation to nourish skin cells with nutrients and oxygen, accelerates tissue repair and wound healing (ideal post-laser or procedure), reduces inflammation and oxidative stress, and improves the skin’s moisture retention by reinforcing the barrier,” Del Campo explained to Byrdie. PDRN has been investigated since the 1990s, focusing mainly on wound healing and tissue repair.

PDRN boasts decades of peer-reviewed medical research, distinguishing it from many fleeting skincare trends. Dermatologists highlight its established applications in wound care and tissue regeneration as the basis for its cosmetic uses.
“PDRN maintains its relevance because it is supported by extensive scientific research and medical applications, lending it credibility,” Melda Isaac, MD, stated in Cosmopolitan. Salmon is preferred as a source due to its purity profile. “Research suggests that salmon sperm are the most appropriate source for extracting highly purified DNA with minimal risks of impurities, owing to their low levels of proteins, peptides, and other contaminants when compared to other DNA sources,” Isaac noted.
What Are the Skin Benefits of PDRN Over Time?
Consistent use of PDRN, especially via injection, has been associated with enhanced firmness, tone, and elasticity by stimulating fibroblasts and increasing collagen. Building collagen is vital for maintaining a youthful appearance, as it provides structural integrity and skin resilience.
“Its regenerative capabilities support cellular rejuvenation and stimulate fibroblasts to boost collagen production, aiding skin recovery more effectively after stress or injury,” Anetta Reszko, MD, FAAD, a board-certified dermatologist in New York City, told Women’s Health. Over time, Reszko noted that PDRN can “enhance tone, firmness, and overall skin quality, especially in areas that appear depleted or slow to recover.”

Individuals with fish or seafood allergies should either conduct careful patch tests or avoid PDRN products entirely. For others, this ingredient is generally well tolerated across various skin types, according to Del Campo.

How Do You Use PDRN Skincare at Home?
PDRN is most effective in leave-on formulas like serums and creams, allowing the ingredient sufficient time to penetrate and work on the skin. Serums are particularly favored due to their smaller molecule sizes, which facilitate deeper absorption.
