And Just Like That Concludes After Season 3
Carrie Bradshaw’s journey reaches its conclusion once again with And Just Like That.
Showrunner Michael Patrick King announced on Friday, August 1, that And Just Like That will not return for additional episodes on HBO Max following a two-part season 3 finale.
“And just like that … the ongoing storytelling of the Sex And The City universe is coming to a close. As I penned the final episode of season three, it became evident that this might be a perfect moment to conclude,” the statement read. “Together with Sarah Jessica Parker, Casey Bloys, and Sarah Aubrey, we decided to wrap up the beloved series this year with a two-part finale and expanded the original series order from 10 episodes to 12.”
At 70, King explained why this information wasn’t disclosed before the show premiered its third season in May.
“SJP and I decided to withhold this announcement until now because we didn’t want the term ‘final’ to overshadow the enjoyment of watching the season,” he continued. “We express our immense gratitude to all the viewers who welcomed these characters into their homes and hearts over the years.”
The season 3 finale, set to air on August 14, will now serve as the series finale.
Sex and the City, which aired on HBO from 1998 to 2004, followed Carrie (Parker) and her dating life in New York, accompanied by her friends Charlotte (Kristin Davis), Miranda Hobbes (Cynthia Nixon), and Samantha (Kim Cattrall). The franchise expanded into two films before Max revived the show in December 2021.
And Just Like That has sparked numerous discussions for various reasons, including significant character comebacks — notably a brief appearance by Cattrall — and unexpected plot twists (such as Big’s demise, the introduction of Che, and everything Aidan).
King has previously defended the show’s choice to take bold creative risks.
“We accomplished something challenging, which was to take something familiar and make it fresh,” King told Variety in February 2022. “For better or worse.”
King reflected on the varied reactions he observed on social media, stating, “I monitor in macro, not micro. I observe the broader trends: ‘This is the best thing I’ve ever seen! This is the worst thing I’ve ever seen. They should all be killed! I can’t live without them. The outfits are terrible, the outfits are incredible.’ I’m not focused on the details of anything.”
And Just Like That airs on Max Thursdays at 9 p.m. ET.
