Alana ‘Honey Boo Boo’ Thompson on the Road to Recovery After Serious Car Accident
Alana “Honey Boo Boo” Thompson is on the mend after experiencing a car accident.
“Someone wasn’t paying attention and T-boned her on her route. They always speed on that road,” announced Thompson’s mother, Mama June Shannon, in an Instagram post on Friday, September 26.
“I have to give credit where it’s due. The 23-year-old boy admitted he was driving 40 miles per hour and wasn’t focused,” Shannon, 46, added. Although Thompson, 20, is doing “fine,” her mom mentioned she’s dealing with a few “issues” post-accident.
“She was struck on the driver’s side. It could have turned out much worse,” Shannon explained in her post. “She was taken to the hospital. She is experiencing back pain and some headaches.”
Shannon provided a detailed account in the caption of her post.
The day had been “crazy” since 3 PM, Shannon shared on Instagram. Moments like these make her “hate” that “Alana Thompson is 23 hours away, but she is chasing her dreams.” She expressed that receiving news of a car accident as a mother was difficult, but she’s relieved that Thompson is alright.
She continued, “She is resting. It could have been much worse. She is a bit banged up, but other than that she is okay [this was her] first car accident. She was on her way to get her hair done, and her first call was to the police or her clinical director because tomorrow would have been her first day of clinicals. She is determined to get up in the morning, and we’ll see. She’s heading to Denver to sort out her rental car and check on her car situation while making sure she’s alright.”
Thompson is presently a student at Regis University, pursuing a nursing degree.
“I always told myself that I want something bigger and better than just being on TV. So, you have to get up and go; you have to graduate to make it to college and become the nurse you aspire to be,” she stated to People in May 2025 about her choice to further her education.
Thompson later shared that despite her upbringing in the reality TV spotlight, starting her education posed financial challenges. At one point, Shannon took $35,000 from Thompson’s Dancing With the Stars earnings—an amount that has since been repaid, yet without an apology.
Ultimately, Thompson found it in her heart to forgive her mother, a process she described as challenging. “When she struggled with addiction, I just focused on the day she’d recover,” she reflected. “We’re doing well now. I hope it continues. I’ve learned not to set any expectations for her.”
