Kate Middleton Reveals the ‘Hidden Truths’ of Mental Health in Motherhood
Princess Kate Middleton is bringing attention to the realities of mental health in motherhood.
The Maternal Mental Health Alliance (MMHA), a charity based in the United Kingdom, took to Instagram on Friday, November 14, to share a message authored by the Princess of Wales, 43, regarding the significance of their latest exhibition, “This is Also Motherhood,” which addresses “the often unseen aspects of mental health during pregnancy and beyond.”
“The Maternal Mental Health Alliance continues to amplify the voices of those experiencing perinatal mental illness,” Kate expressed. “At the core of this exhibition are ten remarkable women. Their bravery in openly sharing their experiences—marked by trauma, joy, or resilience—underscores the immense vulnerability and strength inherent in the human experience. Through their portraits and letters, they remind us that no one should navigate the perinatal journey in isolation.”
The royal patron, who supports the charity, went on to say, “This exhibition exemplifies MMHA’s fundamental mission: ensuring that every family in the U.K. has access to the mental health care and support they require, before, during, and after pregnancy.”
Kate concluded, “‘This is Also Motherhood’ illustrates that challenges in perinatal mental health can be overcome. Every parent’s narrative holds value, and every voice contributes to a society centered on love, hope, and compassion.”
In the caption accompanying the post, the MMHA expressed their “honor” in receiving the letter from Kate, highlighting that her “support” for the exhibition and their mission to normalize discussions around mental health in early motherhood is deeply appreciated by the MMHA team.
“We’re excited to share this letter with you, as it eloquently encapsulates our ambitions for this new campaign and the work of the MMHA,” the caption further noted.
Kate shares three children — Prince George, 12, Princess Charlotte, 10, and Prince Louis, 7 — with her husband Prince William. The U.K. native has openly discussed her mental health challenges throughout her motherhood journey, revealing in 2017 that there were times she felt “lonely.”
“You do feel quite isolated … But actually, so many other mothers are going through exactly what you’re experiencing,” Kate shared during an event at the Global Academy in London. “It’s about being brave enough, as you clearly were, to reach out.”
Kate’s letter addressing mental health in motherhood was shared a day before she posted a personal message on Instagram about “learning to let go.” In a video titled “Autumn,” the third installment in her “Mother Nature” series, Kate provided narration reflecting on “the season for introspection and growth.”
“With the change of seasons, Mother Nature teaches us that there is beauty in change, impermanence, and in letting go. These are the natural rhythms of life,” she explained.
The video caption stated, “Autumn — a time of reflection, development, and deeper connection. Embrace the beauty of transformation as we prepare for winter’s rest. C.”
