The Reason Behind Cynthia Erivo’s Micro Braids in Wicked

Cynthia Erivo had a specific vision for Elphaba’s hair.

In a conversation with Variety on Tuesday, December 17, the 37-year-old performer discussed the micro braids she wore while portraying Elphaba in Wicked. While other actresses styled Elphaba’s hair in smooth black waves, Erivo chose braids to establish “a direct connection between me as a Black woman and Elphaba as a green lady.”

“I suggested we could reinvent that hairstyle into micro-braids because I believed it would maintain movement and length while presenting a texture that’s somewhat different from what is typically seen on stage,” Erivo shared. She emphasized that the hairstyle fostered a connection “to the person beneath [the green paint], me.”

While embodying Elphaba, Erivo explored various styles, including larger braids, ponytails, and half-up hairstyles.

Before taking on the role of Elphaba, Erivo shaved her head and eyebrows so that her scalp could also be painted green. She previously spoke about her experience with micro-braids in November, expressing, “I aimed to showcase the versatility of braids and the fun they can bring.” Erivo also noted how “emotional the hair could be” during scenes that required significant “movement.”

In addition to her hair transformation, Elphaba undergoes a nail evolution as she develops her powers. As she becomes the Wicked Witch of the West, her nails grow longer and darker, thanks to her long-time manicurist, Shea Osei.

Erivo thanked Osei on Instagram after wrapping up filming, expressing, “Meet my dear friend @shadesofshea_, who I’ve known and worked with since I was 16!! 💚,” alongside a post featuring her in Elphaba’s attire. “She was the first person I thought of when we agreed to have Elphaba’s nails grow and evolve throughout the films, reflecting her personal transformation.”

During the Wicked press tour, Erivo showcased long, green jeweled nails, blending Elphaba’s signature hue with her sparkling personality.
