Where Are They Now? Catching Up with Breaking Amish’s Biggest Stars
Even though the original Breaking Amish concluded in 2014, fans have maintained a keen interest in the lives of its cast members over the years.
The TLC series, which debuted in 2012, originally tracked the journeys of five young Anabaptist adults — Kate Stoltz, Jeremiah Raber, Abe Schmucker, Rebecca Schmucker, and Sabrina Burkholder — as they relocated to New York City to explore whether they wanted to leave their community or return home.
The original cast returned for a second season in 2013; however, that year also saw the launch of an entirely new cast in Breaking Amish: Los Angeles. The fourth season, titled Breaking Amish: Brooklyn, aired in 2014.
Although the Breaking Amish series wrapped up in 2014, a spinoff featuring the original cast, Return to Amish, premiered on TLC in the same year. This spinoff ran for seven seasons until May 2023.
“Sadly, it’s safe to say that the show is finished,” Raber stated in a March 2025 Facebook post confirming the conclusion of Return to Amish. “A huge thank you to everyone who contributed to the show’s success! I have many exciting projects planned this year, so I hope you’ll stick around to see!”
Scroll down to find out what the biggest stars of Breaking Amish are up to now:
Kate Stoltz
Stoltz, raised in an Amish family, participated in the first two seasons of Breaking Amish and returned for the first three seasons of Return to Amish. During her time on the show, she opted to remain in New York City to pursue a career in modeling and fashion design. In 2015, Stoltz launched her own fashion line called the Kate Stoltz label.
Jeremiah Raber
Raber, also from an Amish background, became one of the breakout stars in the initial seasons of Breaking Amish. He returned for the 2014 spinoff Return to Amish, remaining part of the main cast for seven seasons. He was previously married to Carmela Mendez Raber from 2016 to 2022 and shares three children with his former spouse, Naomi Stutzman.
Post-Return to Amish, Jeremiah has faced significant health challenges, sharing updates on social media regarding his condition.
“I hope to visit the doctor soon to get it checked,” Raber mentioned in a TikTok video from March 2024, expressing gratitude to his followers for helping him raise enough funds to address his heart issue, stating, “I appreciate it more than you know.”
In April 2024, InTouch Weekly reported that Raber spent two days hospitalized due to heart problems and diabetic ketoacidosis. (The Cleveland Clinic describes this condition as a severe complication of diabetes and often undiagnosed Type 1 diabetes.)
At the end of 2025, he revealed via social media that he was hospitalized for “possible liver failure” and was “waiting to be life-flighted to another hospital.”
Sabrina Burkholder
Burkholder was the sole Mennonite on the TLC show, participating in two seasons of the original Breaking Amish before she returned for Return to Amish in seasons 1 through 3 and 5 through 7. After the original series, Burkholder battled drug addiction.
She experienced a near-fatal heroin overdose in 2018 and has remained sober since.
“People tell me I don’t look the same; that’s because I’ve changed,” she shared in a June 2021 Instagram post. “Jesus worked in my life and I’m so thankful for sobriety.”
After Return to Amish concluded, Burkholder is now living a quiet life with her six children in Pennsylvania. She has daughters Oakley and Ariana from a previous relationship, son Zekiah, and daughters Skylar and Kalani with ex-boyfriend Jethro Nolt, and son Aro with boyfriend Scottie.
Rebecca Byler-Schmucker and Abe Schmucker
Rebecca and Abe, both from Amish families, met on season 1 of Breaking Amish and eventually married in the season 1 finale. They went on to appear in Return to Amish in 2014 but chose to leave the show in 2017 for a more private life in Pennsylvania. The couple shares a daughter named Malika, in addition to Rebecca’s daughter Kayla from a previous relationship.
Rebecca and Abe celebrated their 12th anniversary in September 2024.
“Happy 12th anniversary babe! I’m so grateful for you,” Rebecca wrote on Instagram, sharing several photos of them together.
Mary Schmucker
Abe’s mother, Mary, appeared in both Breaking Amish and Return to Amish alongside Abe and Rebecca. While starting as a recurring cast member, she continued on the show even after their departure.
In 2022, Mary was diagnosed with colon cancer. She passed away in March 2025 due to complications from the illness. Mary was 65 years old.
“I can’t believe you’re really gone. Rest easy, Mom. We will always love and miss you!” Rebecca posted on Instagram in April 2025.
