Jason Priestley and Cindy Sampson of Private Eyes Welcome New Baby
The initial glimpse of Jason Priestley and Cindy Sampson‘s comeback in Private Eyes reveals their chemistry as a fictional couple — now with a surprise baby.
In an exclusive preview from Us, the Private Eyes: West Coast season 1 trailer showcases Shade (Priestley) and Angie (Sampson) contemplating a return to their private investigation days amidst a significant move and other surprising developments in their lives.
“This is what we used to do,” Shade remarks as Angie delves into a new case five years later. “Have you forgotten all the close calls we had? We are parents now!”
Shade emphasizes that “it can’t be like it was” regarding their careers, stating, “We work from home now and we set up our agency right here.”
Shade mentions that they find themselves on a “new coast” with fresh cases, albeit with the “same old weirdo suspects.” In another part of the sneak peek, Shade is playfully teased for having a newborn later in life when someone asks how old he will be when his son graduates.
“I am younger than Clooney!” he jokes, referring to George Clooney, who became a father for the first time at age 56.
Based on the novel by G.B. Joyce, Private Eyes starred Priestley and Sampson as private investigators solving crimes in Toronto. The series aired in Canada for five seasons before its cancellation in 2021.
Five years later, Priestley, 57, and Sampson, 48, reunite for Private Eyes: West Coast, picking up after Shade and Angie’s on-screen kiss.
“A lot has changed, and Shade and Angie find themselves in very different situations,” Priestley shared with Us. “As the show begins, Matt Shade is on a book tour, promoting a book, and embracing retirement in Victoria while being a full-time father.”
Priestley hinted at upcoming challenges, mentioning, “But being retired, Angie is facing the realities of having a one-year-old and the baby becoming less dependent on her. How will she reintegrate into society?”
He continued: “When the chance arises in the first episode for Shade and Angie to step back into the PI world, she is very eager and wants to dive in. Shade is a bit more cautious but, being a supportive husband, he says, ‘Angie, if you want to do this, I guess we’re doing it.’ He’s on board surprisingly fast.”
Sampson, for her part, eagerly welcomed the opportunity to revisit these beloved characters.
“It was surprisingly easy. Everything flowed seamlessly. After working together for so long, it felt quite natural,” she told Us. “We filmed 60 episodes of the original series over nearly six years, so there was a familial ease. … We also layered in more humor, making it feel less serious than before — and yes, the baby adds a new twist.”
Private Eyes: West Coast premieres on The CW on Monday, October 5, at 8 p.m. ET.
