Gigi Hadid Commemorates Her Brother’s Dog with Heartwarming Photo of Daughter Khai
Gigi Hadid joined her family in paying a heartfelt tribute to her brother Anwar Hadid’s beloved dog, Dexter, who has sadly passed away.
Gigi, 30, shared a touching image of her 5-year-old daughter, Khai, gently petting the black Labrador mix, who was adopted by Anwar and his former girlfriend Dua Lipa in 2020.
“Fly high, lil Dexter,” Gigi expressed in her Instagram Story on Sunday, February 1. “We loved babysitting you. You were a special and wonderful nephew and cousin (and the best son to @anwarhadid). We’ll miss you so much. Rest easy.”
Earlier that day, Anwar, 26, shared the heartbreaking news that his “best friend in the whole world passed away” on Saturday, January 31. He acknowledged Dexter’s profound impact on his mental health during a particularly challenging time.
“You came into my life when I wanted to end my life every day. And you left me today… I’m more ready than ever to live this beautiful life,” he wrote. “I had hoped it would be with you, my little son… but I know you are with me in every single lifetime… SEVEN!!! 7️⃣ Now I have to fly solo. I’ll miss you, my angel. DEXTER!!!!! SOUR-PATCH KID.”
Gigi also showed support for her brother in the comments of his Instagram post, assuring Anwar that Dexter was “so special and so loved.”
“[Dexter was] very lucky to have found a soulmate in you, brother 🙂 Some of the best go too soon. Rest in peace, Dexter,” Gigi added.
Their sister Bella Hadid reassured Anwar that Dexter will always live “forever in our hearts.”
“The wisest, sweetest, best buddha boy, I will miss you every day, and [Bella’s dog] Beans will miss her best friend every day,” Bella, 29, noted. “You raised the best boy in the world, my brother. My nephew for life 💯 He will be with you in spirit every day, guiding you like the angel he is. I love you Dexy, I love you Weesh.”
Anwar received additional comfort from his parents, Mohamed and Yolanda Hadid, during this difficult time. (Mohamed and Yolanda were married from 1994 to 2000. Mohamed also has two older daughters, Marielle and Alana, with his first wife, Mary Butler, and shares a 23-year-old daughter, Aydan Nix, with Terri Hatfield Dull.)
“We have loved this beautiful creature,” Mohamed shared. “He lived in my house with Anwar for two beautiful years. He had the most beautiful face and eyes. We will miss him.”
In her own tribute to Dexter, Real Housewives of Beverly Hills alum Yolanda remarked that “some souls choose fur so they can love and guide us more easily.”
“God lent us Dexter for six precious years, and we cherished every moment we spent with this little guy. While he may have been small in size, he was a giant and a powerhouse in personality. Anwar rescued him, but he came with a purpose: to love, protect, and comfort my son,” she expressed via Instagram on Sunday. “They were inseparable. He was a big love wrapped in the littlest, purest form—wise and particular, like a little old man… My son’s baby boy, our family’s heart, we will miss you.”
Yolanda concluded, “Run free, sweet angel… Thank you for your loyalty, your gentleness, and the love you gave. You fulfilled your mission on earth, and now you will be your daddy’s guardian angel in heaven. Oma loves you, Dexter—you will be missed and will live in our hearts forever.”
Anwar and Lipa, 30, announced Dexter’s adoption in August 2020, sharing an adorable photo that highlighted a distinctive white fur patch on his chest.
“Our spirit companion came to us with a big number 7 on his chest… some things are meant to be!!!! BIG DEX,” Anwar shared at that time.
Anwar and Lipa ended their relationship in December 2021 after two years of dating. The “Levitating” singer is now engaged to British actor Callum Turner.
