Chris Abbott Addresses Aubrey Plaza’s Baby Announcement

Chris Abbott has shared his excitement about expecting his first child with Aubrey Plaza.

“Can we say congratulations?” Jenna Bush Hager asked Abbott, 40, on the Monday, May 18, episode of Today With Jenna and Sheinelle. “You’re expecting a babe.”

Abbott quipped, “I thought it was for my Tony nomination! No, no, just kidding.”

Bush Hager, 44, highlighted that Abbott has “a lot going on” these days, noting his 2026 Tony Award nomination for Best Performance by an Actor in a Featured Role in a Play for his portrayal of Biff in Death of a Salesman.

Abbott mentioned feeling that there’s “too much going on” in his life.

“We love Aubrey here,” Bush Hager added. “We’re thrilled for the both of you.”

Abbott replied, “That’s very kind. Thank you. It’s very exciting.”

Last month, Plaza’s representative confirmed to People that she and Abbott are expecting their first baby together. A source revealed that the actress’ pregnancy was “a beautiful surprise” and that the couple feels “very blessed” to become first-time parents this fall.

Plaza and Abbott collaborated on the 2020 thriller Black Bear and the 2023 Off-Broadway revival of Danny and the Deep Blue Sea before they began dating. Gossip account DeuxMoi reported in July 2025 that the two were seen together at The Chatham Berry Farm near New York City. They later attended a New York Knicks game together later that same year.

Before their relationship, Plaza was married to the late Jeff Baena. Plaza and Baena had been separated for four months before his tragic death by suicide at age 47 in January 2025.

“This is an unimaginable tragedy,” Plaza’s representative stated to Us Weekly following Baena’s death. “We are deeply thankful for the support we’ve received. Please respect our privacy during this time.”

Plaza spoke about his passing for the first time in August 2025 on Amy Poehler‘s “Good Hang” podcast.

“To get it out of the way, people want to see you and how you are,” Poehler commented then. “They care about you and want to check in. You had this awful, tragic year. You lost your husband and have been navigating that while seeking support.”

She continued, “On behalf of all who feel connected to you, how are you feeling today?”

Plaza expressed she was “happy” to be with Poehler at that moment before discussing her grief.

“Overall, I’m here, functioning, and grateful to be moving through life,” Plaza shared. “I think I’m doing okay, but it’s obviously a daily struggle.”
