Euphoria’s Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje Discusses Whether Maddy and Alamo Were Intimate
Euphoria has left its audience with numerous unanswered questions during season 3, particularly regarding whether Maddy and Alamo truly had a sexual encounter — a topic that Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje is finally shedding light on.
“It was a fascinating scene because it’s so complex and loaded,” Akinnuoye-Agbaje, 58, told Us Weekly exclusively at the MPTF NextGen Summer Party, presented by Delta Air Lines and Waymo, on Sunday, May 31.
He emphasized that his character, Alamo, “was the mastermind behind the entire sequence” with Maddy (Alexa Demie).
“From the bathing suit to the music to the champagne, he had it all planned out,” he elaborated. “Sam [Levinson] and I talked about this. While it was meant to be flirtatious and playful from Alamo’s viewpoint, there’s an underlying reality that suggests, you know, you’re going to do exactly what I instruct you to do.”
Akinnuoye-Agbaje added: “To clarify your question, did he sleep with her? Well, he wasn’t there for a game. For what she was asking him to do — take out a life and provide a million dollars — yes, he certainly did what was necessary with that beautiful lady.”
The initial confusion arose from a May episode where Alamo made Maddy wear a bathing suit and get into a hot tub with him. While he ultimately agreed to assist Maddy in obtaining the $1 million required to save Nate (Jacob Elordi), the scene concluded before the details of their interaction were revealed.
In the season 3 finale, which aired on Sunday, Maddy visited Alamo at his strip club, during which he reflected on his life decisions. He made a move on Maddy, suggesting they raise four kids together. Alamo began to touch Maddy — who had settled on his lap — before the scene abruptly cut out, hinting at an unseen kiss.
However, Alamo’s conversation with Maddy was brief, interrupted by Ali (Colman Domingo), who sought revenge for Rue’s (Zendaya) death.
While talking to Us at the annual fundraiser, Akinnuoye-Agbaje acknowledged potential backlash regarding Alamo’s role in Rue’s tragic overdose.
“You see, it’s a passionate fan base. Ultimately, it’s their show,” he remarked. “It existed before I joined. I’ve played my part. How they respond is their journey, and I’ll leave it at that.”
Akinnuoye-Agbaje then shared his thoughts on the possibility of Euphoria continuing with more seasons — even though Levinson has confirmed the show’s conclusion.
“The beauty of Euphoria is — first and foremost — the remarkable performance by Zendaya. She narrates the series and we largely experience it through her eyes,” he noted. “One of the beautiful elements is that [her death] allows for exploration of many other characters’ perspectives. Whether they are part of Rue’s circle or belong to Laurie’s or Alamo’s group, there’s an opportunity to delve into their backstories, relationships, and the adventures they undertake.”
He concluded: “This is television. There’s always a chance that it could — if they choose to — [expand on this world more]. Whether they decide to or not … that remains uncertain.”
Euphoria is now streaming on HBO Max.
