Melissa Gilbert Leaves When Calls the Heart Following Controversy
Melissa Gilbert has announced her departure from When Calls the Heart ahead of season 14, in light of her husband Timothy Busfield’s child sex abuse scandal.
“Many people have queried about my return to When Calls the Heart this coming season,” the 62-year-old actress stated in a message shared via Instagram on Thursday, July 16. “The response is no, I will not be returning.”
Gilbert attributed her exit to “budget issues” but extended her best wishes to her former colleagues.
“I wish all my dear friends in Hope Valley a wonderful and successful season 14,” she expressed.
She also mentioned being “eternally grateful” for the opportunity to “bring Georgie McGill to life” over the past two seasons.
“It was a wonderful couple of seasons, but it’s time to say goodbye,” she added in her caption. “When one door closes, another opens. Excited for what lies ahead. #thatsshowbiz #onwardandupward.”
Gilbert joined the Hallmark series in season 12, which aired in 2025, portraying Georgie, a former Mountie forensic investigator with a romantic history involving Jack Wagner’s character, Bill Avery.
Fans expressed their disappointment in the comments, lamenting that Gilbert won’t return next season.
“Hopefully they’ll bring you back! You were the perfect addition to the cast,” one user commented, while another said, “Oh no! Poor Bill won’t get his happily ever after! 😢.”
Gilbert’s exit from When Calls the Heart unfolds against the backdrop of Busfield’s ongoing child sex abuse case. Earlier this year, Busfield, 69, was indicted on child sex abuse charges by a grand jury in New Mexico. According to a press release obtained by Us Weekly in February, he faced four counts of criminal sexual contact with a child.
Busfield has pleaded not guilty and recently submitted a motion to quash the grand jury indictment.
“Timothy Busfield is innocent. This motion highlights egregious prosecutorial misconduct during the grand jury process, which prevented jurors from hearing critical testimony, witnesses, and evidence despite repeated requests,” asserted Busfield’s civil attorney, Stanton “Larry” Stein, in a statement to Us in June. “The government suppressed exculpatory evidence, misrepresented the law, and failed to uphold basic due process protections.”
Gilbert has stood by Busfield amidst the allegations.
“Our previous life is over,” the former Little House on the Prairie star stated during an April appearance on Good Morning America. “We are mourning what we once had—our plans, dreams, ideas, and projects. For Tim, it’s over. Even if he is exonerated, he will always carry this label. [He’s] the last person who would ever harm a child.”
