Jamie Lynn Spears Refutes Claims That Zoey 101 Ended Due to Pregnancy
Jamie Lynn Spears is dispelling the persistent rumors that Zoey 101 came to an end due to her pregnancy at the age of 16.
“If we’re addressing a definite misconception, it’s that many people believe Zoey 101 ended because I got pregnant. That is not the case,” Spears, 35, remarked during her appearance on the “Momarchy” podcast on Tuesday, August 18.
Spears mentioned that her eldest daughter, Maddie, 18, frequently receives comments on TikTok from fans of the Nickelodeon series, claiming that she was the reason the show was canceled after four seasons.
“We find it amusing,” the Sweet Magnolias actress continued. “But that’s simply not the truth.”
She clarified that Zoey 101 had completed filming before she became pregnant, although the final season had not yet aired.
“That’s the reality in the entertainment industry. Many people outside the business don’t grasp it. They think we film it, and it gets released right away,” she explained. “In reality, you film it, and it might not air until the following year or later. That’s where the confusion arises. We were already finished filming, and there was never going to be another season.”
Spears concluded, “My wonderful Maddie is not the reason the show ended.”
Zoey 101 featured Spears as Zoey Brooks, a student at Pacific Coast Academy, an elite Southern California boarding school that previously admitted only boys. The series also included stars such as Paul Butcher, Sean Flynn, Kristin Herrera, Christopher Massey, Alexa Nikolas, Erin Sanders, Matthew Underwood, Victoria Justice, and Austin Butler.
Zoey 101 first aired on Nickelodeon in January 2005 and continued until May 2008. The fourth and final season completed production in August 2007, two months before the show’s staff was informed of Spears’ pregnancy with Maddie, whom she shares with ex Casey Aldridge. (The cast later reunited for a follow-up film titled Zoey 102 in 2023.)
Spears announced her pregnancy in a December 2007 conversation with OK! Magazine.
“I can’t say it was something I was planning at the time,” she expressed. “But now that it’s happening, I’m looking forward to being the best mom I can be.”
At the time of Maddie’s birth in June 2008, Spears was 17 and Aldridge was 19.
After her breakup with then-fiancé Aldridge, Spears moved on to marry Jamie Watson. The couple wed in 2014 and welcomed their daughter Ivey in 2018.
Earlier this year, Spears honored Maddie as she graduated from high school and reflected on her experience as a mother watching her daughters grow up.
“Watching your children grow up is one of the most beautiful and fulfilling experiences we can have as humans, and I am truly grateful for each moment, both the ups and downs, throughout this journey of motherhood so far,” she shared on Instagram in April. “It’s a bittersweet experience, as you’re immensely proud of their achievements while also wishing they could remain your baby forever.”
