The gang is gearing up as the cast of Community prepares for a new movie on Peacock.

In 2022, Peacock announced that the beloved sitcom created by Dan Harmon would be transformed into a movie, featuring many of the original cast members. This announcement brought to life one of Community‘s most iconic catchphrases, as Danny Pudi’s character Abed often claimed they would have “six seasons and a movie.”

Premiering on NBC in 2009, Community followed a group of students at Greendale Community College and ran for five seasons before its cancellation in 2014. It was then revived for a final season on Yahoo! Screen, which lasted less than a year after the last episode aired in June 2015.

Shortly after the show ended, star Joel McHale hinted at the potential for a Community movie. “Dan Harmon has to write it, and writing a movie script takes time,” he stated in a June 2015 interview with HuffPostLive. “It’s not an easy process, so the script must come first.”

Which ‘Community’ Cast Members Are Coming Back for the Movie?

Upon the film’s announcement, it was confirmed that McHale would reprise his role as Jeff Winger alongside Pudi as Abed Nadir, Alison Brie as Annie Edison, Gillian Jacobs as Britta Perry, Jim Rash as Dean Craig Pelton, and Ken Jeong as Ben Chang.

Donald Glover, who portrayed Troy Barnes, confirmed his involvement in a January 2024 interview with Entertainment Tonight, stating, “It’s really just a scheduling thing, but I’m in. I’m all in.”

“It’s definitely happening, but I can’t specify when. I swear, it’s in motion,” Glover shared with Deadline in May 2024, laughing off rumors of he being the cause for delays: “People are blaming me online, but it’s not me! Maybe it was me last year, but not this time.”

In January 2024, Jeong hinted that Yvette Nicole Brown, who played Shirley Bennett, might also be coming back when he listed cast members’ names in an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.

It’s unclear if other Community favorites like John Oliver (Professor Ian Duncan), Jonathan Banks (Professor Buzz Hickey), and Paget Brewster (Frankie Dart) will return.

Keith David, who played Elroy Patashnik in the final season, expressed interest in returning as well. “No one has reached out directly to me, but if they did, I would have more information,” he told Screen Rant in January 2024. “Still, I hope to have more news when the time comes. Let’s keep those letters and cards coming. We all want Elroy in!”

TV Shows That Were Saved After Cancellation

In recent years, numerous TV shows have been resurrected after cancellation due to intense fan campaigns and last-minute saves. For example, fans of Brooklyn Nine-Nine voiced their outrage when Fox canceled the show in May 2018 — featuring stars like Andy Samberg (Jake Peralta), Melissa Fumero (Amy Santiago), Andre Braugher (Raymond Holt), Terry Crews (Terry Jeffords), and Stephanie Beatriz (Rosa) […]

Will Chevy Chase Be in the ‘Community’ Movie?

Chase is unlikely to return as Pierce Hawthorne since his character was killed off in season 5. He left the series in 2012 after reportedly making inappropriate remarks on set. Although he apologized, Glover noted in 2018 that Chase made several racially insensitive comments toward him while filming.

In September 2023, Chase critiqued the show for not being “funny enough” for him during an interview on the “WTF with Marc Maron” podcast, stating, “I felt a bit limited. Everyone had their parts, which were good, but it just didn’t pack the punch I was looking for.”

What’s the Storyline for the ‘Community’ Movie?

The details of the movie’s plot are still under wraps, but it is expected to feature the former Greendale students reuniting at the community college for some entertaining escapades.

However, Harmon has hinted at what fans should not expect to see when the movie airs on Peacock, particularly one of the show’s infamous paintball battles. “Running around with guns in a school was never a good idea on TV, even back then,” he noted in a December 2022 episode of the “Six Seasons and a Podcast” podcast.

Harmon also suggested that the film will not reflect the plot of the show’s final season, where the study group returned to Greendale to save the college.

Is There a Script for the ‘Community’ Movie?

Glover mentioned in January 2024 that he was informed the script was complete, but he hadn’t had the chance to read it yet.

Harmon confirmed Glover’s claim in a February 2024 interview with Variety, noting that Glover’s sources can be unreliable since the script often seems “almost done.”

Teasing the film’s narrative, Harmon added: “I can reveal that it’s set on the campus of Greendale Community College. I’m incredibly excited about it, and we’re nearing completion.”

When Is Filming Set to Begin for the ‘Community’ Movie?

Brown confirmed the project was still in its early stages during an October 2024 interview with TheWrap, saying, “I believe it’s being reworked, but we all have read a complete script. So a script does exist.”

She further remarked: “I heard we secured the significant funding in L.A. that will allow us to make this film. So we’re definitely going to be filming there. We’re just trying to align everyone’s schedules. We had plans, but then the strike happened.”

In April 2025, McHale exclusively informed Us Weekly that they had officially “secured the financing” to initiate production for the film. “Funding was the most challenging aspect to achieve, but we’ve accomplished that,” he explained. “Now it’s all about scheduling. I think it’ll be shooting likely this year, probably in the fall. That’s my prediction and hope.”

What Insights Have the ‘Community’ Cast Provided About the Movie?

“I’ve gone through the script, and it’s incredibly amusing,” Brie shared during an April 2024 appearance on Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen. While she refrained from giving any plot spoilers, Brie expressed her hope that her character, Annie, “hasn’t changed too much because I loved her just as she was.”
