Bret Easton Ellis’ The Shards: Exploring the Line Between Reality and Illusion
The Shards is characterized as a fictionalized memoir about Bret Easton Ellis’ high school years — raising the question of what is true and what is fabricated?
As per the official synopsis, The Shards takes place in Los Angeles in 1981 and follows “a 17-year-old version of Ellis during his last year at the prestigious Buckley prep school.” His life is disrupted by the arrival of a mysterious new student, Robert Mallory, whose “unnerving presence coincides with the actions of a serial killer referred to as The Trawler.”
Igby Rigney plays Ellis, now 62, in an adaptation based on Ellis’ book of the same name. This 2023 release marked Ellis’ first publication in 13 years and includes a disclaimer noting that all significant characters in The Shards are fictional — except for the narrator.
Following the release of The Shards, Ellis shared that he received a message from a former classmate who recognized themselves in a character. In a 2023 interview with Vanity Fair, he recounted the Facebook message that stated, “Of all the names you could have chosen, the name I hate the most is Debbie.”
Ellis also reflected on the broader inspiration behind The Shards.
“I’m not inclined to write a novel without genuinely feeling it, and that may explain why many of my works carry a pervasive sense of dread,” he elaborated. “It likely arises from the origins of the books and mirrors that experience. Conversely, had I been a happier person, would I have been compelled to write? Would I have utilized the novel as a means to convey this? I’m unsure. But this might relate to my attraction to horror and its elements in my work.”

The Trawler
Some readers of Ellis’ book have speculated that the serial killer The Trawler is loosely inspired by The West Side Rapist. Beyond these theories, the character of The Trawler, who preys on high school students in The Shards, is completely fictional.
The Setting
This is accurate because the real Bret graduated from Buckley School in Sherman Oaks. The Los Angeles private school aims to reflect the environment depicted in The Shards, which narrates Bret’s final year of high school.
Bret’s Home Life
While The Shards presents Bret as an only child, the real Bret has several sisters. He previously mentioned on his podcast that he altered this detail after his siblings requested they not be portrayed in his works.
Bret’s Inner Circle
The Shards features Kaia Gerber as Susan Reynolds, Hayes Warner as Debbie Schaffer, and Graham Campbell as Thom Wright, who all form Bret’s close-knit friend group. While some aspects of this group are likely fictionalized for television, Bret did draw inspiration from his senior year and the experiences he shared with his friends during that time.
Debbie, for instance, likely reflects Julie Foreman — the daughter of Hollywood producer John Foreman — whom Bret previously dated.
The Existence of Robert Mallory
The new kid in town, portrayed by Homer Gere, is Robert Mallory, a character whom Bret suspects might be a serial killer. The distinction between fact and fiction is evident by the show’s (and book’s) conclusion, which we won’t reveal here. However, it can be inferred that there was no specific individual in Bret’s life named Robert Mallory.
