Marina Squerciati was absent at the beginning of season 12 of Chicago P.D. — and for a wonderful reason: she welcomed another child into her family!

“2024 was a BIG year for me, literally,” Squerciati, 40, shared on Instagram on Tuesday, December 31, reflecting on her recent life changes.

The actress shared a snapshot of her bare baby bump in a bikini, confirming her pregnancy during the year and that she and her husband Eli Kay-Oliphant have welcomed their second child.

“I thought I handled being a pregnant working mom with grace — swipe to see my daughter’s very different take,” she playfully hinted, showcasing a drawing from her eldest child that depicted Squerciati with a funny expression while her husband and daughter smiled.

Marina Squerciati is just like Us: She’s been envisioning her Chicago P.D. character Kim Burgess’ dream wedding since her engagement in season 11. “I know that [Burgess’ daughter] Makayla really wants it to be in Belize,” Squerciati, 40, exclusively told Us Weekly earlier this month. “Marina Squerciati would like it to be in Belize […]

Squerciati also discussed her absence from the initial episodes of the latest season of Chicago P.D., which resumes fresh episodes on Wednesday, January 8. (She has portrayed Kim Burgess since the show debuted in 2014.)

“PS. THIS was the real reason I wasn’t in the first two episodes of #ChicagoPD,” she commented. “I was having a baby. Have a great NYE, friends!”

She concluded the post with several hashtags highlighting her 2024, including “#workingmom,” “#motherofdragons,” “#MamaInMiami,” “#PregnancyGlow,” and “#ChicagoPDStrong.”

“Oh my goodness! CONGRATS MAMA! ❤️,” fellow actress Katie Stevens reacted in the comments.

Squerciati’s former Chicago P.D. co-star Tracy Spiridakos, who portrayed Hailey Upton until her exit in season 11, added three red heart emojis.

LaRoyce Hawkins — who plays Burgess’ best friend and fellow Intelligence Unit officer, Kevin Atwater — praised her journey in the comments as well. “The best to do it,” he commented. “Love you, Burgess✨.”

Squerciati hasn’t revealed any further details about her newborn, consistent with her approach during her first child’s arrival. The actress welcomed a daughter in May 2017 but has kept her name private.

However, Squerciati has offered fans insights into her life as a mother through social media. Most recently, she took her little one to see & Juliet on Broadway in Chicago.

“We don’t need no stinkin’ Romeo,” she captioned the December 5 photos, featuring both Squerciati and her daughter in colorful wigs for the event. “Also, I barely made it from work! We threw on the wigs in the elevator, I munched on my dinner on the El Platform, and we had to dash a few blocks! (Just wanted to share the reality behind the IG snaps 🫠).”

In addition to welcoming a new baby, Squerciati has been working on season 12 of Chicago P.D.. Earlier this season, her character was promoted to detective, but fans are still hoping for a TV wedding between Burgess and her fiancé Adam Ruzek (Patrick Flueger).

Squerciati, for her part, exclusively told Us Weekly in November that she is equally excited about the prospect of a wedding later this season.

The talented detectives of Chicago P.D. are the core of the show — but the intricate romance between Kim Burgess and Adam Ruzek is what keeps many fans engaged. The initial chemistry between Burgess (Marina Squerciati) and Ruzek (Patrick Flueger) ignited during season 1, episode 8, when Ruzek was in a different relationship. “This is complete […]

“I’ve recently liked [designer] Samantha Sleeper wedding dresses, and my Instagram algorithm is all out of whack,” she explained to Us, laughing, “Instagram thinks I’m planning a wedding!”

After all the ups and downs in Burgess and Ruzek’s storyline — having gotten engaged for the third time during season 11 — Squerciati hopes the production will go all out for their grand moment.

“I want that white dress moment. Burgess deserves a stunning white dress,” she admitted. “Burgess is definitely going to choose dahlias and centerpieces with candles. Come on, let’s give the girl a moment!”

Chicago P.D. returns on NBC Wednesday, January 8, at 10 p.m. ET.
