Chrissy Teigen and John Legend Mourn the Loss of Their Three-Legged Dog, Penny

Chrissy Teigen and John Legend are in mourning after the passing of their cherished dog, Penny.

Penny, the French bulldog who had three legs and was born on the same day that Teigen, 39, and Legend, 46, exchanged wedding vows in 2013, “departed peacefully in her sleep,” Teigen shared on Instagram on Saturday, January 25.

“I adored this girl. We will miss you, Penny,” Legend expressed in the comments.

“Our precious little tripod queen, Penny, passed away peacefully in her sleep today. Born on the same day John and I got married, 11 years ago, she has been with us through every baby, every loss, and every joy,” Teigen posted alongside a carousel of photos featuring their beloved pup. “She found joy in being loved, having her nub rubbed, and destroying any ball she could get her paws on, right until her final weeks.”

The model continued, “Always remember that while every dog is just a few chapters in your long life, for them you are their whole book, their entire existence. Oh Penny. We were so incredibly fortunate to have you. Please say hi to Puddy and Pippa for us. You are all reunited now.”

The couple’s first dog, Puddy, passed away in 2018, followed by Pippa in 2021.

“Losing our first two dogs together was the first time we truly grieved as a couple, particularly when we lost Puddy,” Legend mentioned in a 2024 interview with People. “Experiencing those losses together has truly strengthened our relationship.”

Legend and Teigen are now parents to three dogs: poodle Petey, basset hound Pearl, and their most recent addition, Pebbles.

“They are an integral part of our household,” Teigen shared with People, which also includes a bearded dragon and a hamster. “I often joke about this — people ask how we allow the dogs on the furniture, and I respond that all our furniture is made with outdoor fabric so they can join us.”

In addition to their pets, Legend and Teigen are also the proud parents of four children: Luna, 8, Miles, 6, Esti, 2, and Wren, 19 months. They previously welcomed a stillborn son, Jack, in 2020.

“I had no idea we could experience such grief and share it together, but when we did, it meant so much to so many people, and I learned a great deal from that experience,” Legend revealed to Good Morning America after their loss. “I’m incredibly grateful that my wife had the courage to speak out about it.”

“… Obviously, it’s excruciating for a woman to endure something like this,” Teigen continued, “especially when it was something developing inside you that you were nurturing. Yet, the support for both of us has been remarkably beautiful and incredible.”

Legend has noted that their shared grief has strengthened their bond as a couple, stating to Jay Shetty in 2022, “We’ve endured enough hardships together that it has fortified our relationship and helped us grow closer, allowing us to discover new things about each other.”
