Craig Melvin Addresses Recent Incident on Today Show

Craig Melvin has addressed the situation following an incident involving an intruder at the Today show set.

“Hello everyone. I’ve received messages from many of you in the past few hours. I’m doing well, thank you for checking in. Looking forward to seeing you on @todayshow tomorrow morning,” Melvin, 47, posted on Instagram on Thursday, July 16.

Reports surfaced earlier in the day that an unidentified individual entered the set in New York City, inquiring about meteorologist Al Roker. When the individual could not locate Roker, 71, they confronted Melvin and reportedly lunged at him while yelling a racial slur.

This incident is said to have occurred around 9 a.m. on Thursday after Melvin co-hosted the first and third hours of the Today show alongside Roker, Savannah Guthrie, and Dylan Dreyer. The alleged intruder was detained and subsequently arrested backstage.

“There was a security incident this morning at the TODAY show studio. An individual entered an unauthorized area in a vestibule near Studio 1A,” a statement from the NBC morning show shared with Us Weekly read. “The person approached anchor Craig Melvin, who immediately notified security. The individual was detained and taken into custody by law enforcement without further incident. There was no altercation, and no injuries were reported.”

The statement further mentioned, “TODAY is collaborating fully with law enforcement during their investigation. NBC and TODAY take the safety and security of our employees, talent, staff, and guests very seriously. We are reviewing this incident and our security protocols, and are committed to ensuring a safe environment for everyone at our studios.”

Melvin has been part of the Today show family since 2018. Six years later, he was announced as Guthrie’s co-anchor following Hoda Kotb‘s departure from the series. At that time, Melvin expressed that he was “beyond excited and grateful” to follow in Kotb’s footsteps.

“I want to sincerely thank NBC and everyone here who considered me worthy,” he shared in 2024. “I’ve been blessed throughout my life, and this is just the latest blessing.”
