Donnie Wahlberg of Boston Blue Talks About Danny and Maria’s Breakup
Boston Blue is poised to face backlash from Blue Bloods usweekly fans after a beloved couple’s breakup.
In the episode aired on Friday, April 17, from the CBS series, Danny Reagan’s (Donnie Wahlberg) girlfriend, Maria Baez (Marisa Ramirez), returned to assist with a case. However, their dynamic felt off; Maria revealed that she was grappling with her mother’s declining mental health following a Parkinson’s diagnosis. She surprised both Danny and viewers by deciding to take a break from their relationship.
“She’s in a crisis. She’s unsure of what to do,” Wahlberg, 56, shared exclusively with Us Weekly during CBS Fest on Wednesday, April 15. “Danny is quite stubborn, so he’s not going down without a fight.”
Having portrayed Danny since 2010, Wahlberg reassured fans not to despair just yet, adding, “They should hold onto hope for [them to] rekindle [their romance].” His onscreen partner, Sonequa Martin-Green, also commented on the unexpected twist.
“I would love to see them reunited,” she expressed enthusiastically. “I adore Marissa and think they make a beautiful couple.”
According to Wahlberg, there’s a plan to “extend” Danny and Maria’s storyline.
“I grew up watching General Hospital and All My Children, and I remember when Laura vanished,” he reminisced. “Laura disappeared, leaving Luke heartbroken, and everyone thought, ‘Oh no. Laura left the show.’ But guess what? She returned, and he embraced her. Then she left again. But that’s just TV!”
Meanwhile, in this episode, Sarah’s (Maggie Lawson) personal life fared much better as Seth (Mike Vogel) proposed just moments before Danny and Maria’s breakup.
“What I love most about our show is that it mirrors life,” Lawson, 45, remarked. “It’s authentic. Sometimes when joyous milestones occur, it highlights the other painful struggles in life, serving as a catalyst for the difficult times.”
She continued: “I love that we portrayed this in the way we did, but it’s also incredibly heartbreaking. I apologize that we had to bring up that very tough conversation.”
Lawson expressed to Us that she remains “always hopeful for love” in the future of Danny and Maria. However, her co-star Gloria Reuben felt a bit more pessimistic, sharing, “I hope for a few days, but then I’m like no.”
Boston Blue airs on CBS Fridays at 10 p.m. ET. Catch new episodes streaming the following day on Paramount+.
