Danny Reagan is set to return to television screens later this year in a Blue Bloods spinoff — but this time, it won’t be in New York City.
CBS announced on Tuesday, February 18, that it has officially greenlit Boston Blue (working title) for the 2025-2026 broadcast season.
The new series, which aims to broaden the Blue Bloods universe, will feature Donnie Wahlberg reprising his role as detective Danny Reagan. The storyline will follow the ex-NYPD officer as he “takes on a position” with the Boston Police Department, according to the network.
“Once in Boston, he is partnered with detective Lena Peters, the eldest daughter of a respected law enforcement family,” the official logline details.
Brandon Sonnier and Brandon Margolis will take on roles as showrunners and executive producers for Boston Blue. Jerry Bruckheimer, KristieAnne Reed, and Wahlberg, 55, will also serve as executive producers for the series.
Currently, there is no confirmation regarding whether any of Wahlberg’s Blue Bloods co-stars — or any other members of the Reagan family — will be making appearances in the new series.
Wahlberg, 55, was part of the Blue Bloods lineup for 14 seasons, beginning in 2010 and concluding in 2024. The show chronicled the lives of the Reagan family, led by NYPD commissioner Frank Reagan (Tom Selleck) and his father, former police commissioner Henry Reagan (Len Cariou).
Danny is the oldest living Reagan sibling. His sister, Erin Reagan (Bridget Moynahan), works as an ADA in the Manhattan District Attorney’s office, while their youngest brother, Jamie Reagan (Will Estes), followed the family’s tradition by becoming a police officer after graduating from law school. (They had an additional brother, Joe Reagan, who tragically passed away in the line of duty before the series started.)

In the series finale, which aired in December 2024, Danny shared a heartfelt moment with his grandfather regarding his romantic life, leaving his future open to possibilities. (Danny has two sons with his late wife, Linda but developed a closer bond with his partner Maria Baez, played by Marisa Ramirez, toward the series’ conclusion.)
“I always advised you not to bring work home,” Henry remarked to Danny during the finale, pointing out that the “issue now is you have no one not to bring it home to.” He urged Danny to promise him that he’d “find that someone” after this case.
Danny heeded his grandfather’s advice and asked Baez out for pizza before the final scene.
Wahlberg shared with Us Weekly in December 2024 that this touching moment between the two characters leaves the door open for potential romance. “I think they stand in the doorway of possibility,” the actor hinted.
He elaborated, “I truly enjoyed the development of Danny and Baez’s relationship as friends and partners, building genuine love and respect for one another without needing to rush into a romantic relationship — at least until perhaps the final episode.”
Wahlberg also expressed hope that his “next endeavor” would be “something a fraction as special” as Blue Bloods was.
During that same discussion, Wahlberg hinted at a potential spinoff, mentioning to Us, “I love the character and believe there are more stories left to tell with him.”
He was somewhat elusive when asked if a new series is in development, adding, “I’m not confirming a spinoff, I’m just saying I haven’t shut the door on the character.”
CBS Studios president David Stapf told Deadline in July 2024 that the network is “taking [their] time” in considering a new chapter for the Blue Bloods universe. “We want to ensure we get it right,” he noted.
