Zendaya Hints at the Inspiration Behind Her Spider-Man Press Tour Outfits
Zendaya excels at method dressing, leading fans to speculate that her all-black ensembles during the Spider-Man: Brand New Day press tour may hold deeper significance.
The 29-year-old actress ignited rumors about the potential demise of her character, Michelle “MJ” Jones-Watson, in the forthcoming film with her dark outfits and ambiguous interviews.
On Monday, July 27, she dazzled in an Ashi Studio gown at the movie’s Hollywood premiere. The all-black attire featured a plunging neckline, straps that extended above her shoulders, and a flowing skirt that transitioned into a train. Zendaya accessorized with sheer stockings, lace heels, diamond earrings, and a gothic glamour touch.
Her makeup included smokey black eyeshadow, extended lashes, bronzed cheeks, and nude lips, while her hair was styled down, with bangs elegantly sweeping across her forehead.
Her bold appearance continues a series of black dresses, which fans speculate may symbolize her character’s mourning.
At the premiere, Zendaya hinted at the significance of her press tour looks while conversing with AP News. When a reporter asked, “How much of the press tour for this movie was, ‘Let’s tell MJ’s story through the costuming?’” she responded, “I think you just have to go to the movie and see for yourself.” She further added, “Of course, we love to play the very vivid storytelling. We just like to have fun and extend that storytelling through the press tour.”
On July 22, both Zendaya and Tom Holland confirmed that viewers will shed tears “big time” while watching the film.
“I cried multiple times,” Zendaya shared with Onic Entertainment. Holland concurred, stating, “It’s very sad. It’s cathartic. But also devastating.”
Earlier in the press tour, Zendaya advised another reporter to “bring some tissues” to the theater.
Fans eagerly took to social media, expressing their concerns with comments like, “She is gonna die, isn’t she?”
Another fan drew parallels between Zendaya’s dark press tour looks and those of Millie Bobby Brown, who wore similar ensembles during the Stranger Things season 5 events, which she revealed she wore to “mourn” her character, Eleven.
“I PLAYED THESE GAMES BEFORE,” another user commented.
Throughout the press tour, Zendaya also impressed in a black lace-embellished Ashi Studios outfit, a charcoal Christian Cowan fringe dress, an inky suit, and more.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day is set to hit theaters on Friday, July 31.
