How “Suits: L.A.” Links Stephen Amell’s Character to Harvey Specter

Suits LA creators skillfully integrated connections between characters, notably focusing on Stephen Amell‘s Ted Black, with the cherished characters from the original series.
Amell, 43, shared insights during an interview with Entertainment Weekly on December 16, discussing how his character holds a unique bond with Gabriel Macht‘s Harvey Specter from the original Suits, stating, “Behind my desk, there’s a photograph of a young Ted Black with none other than a young Harvey Specter, implying a rich history between the characters.”
Efforts have been made by NBC’s spinoff to maintain the continuity of the Suits L.A. universe.
“We started our careers together in the D.A.’s office. So, if I could have any original cast member return, it would definitely be Gabriel,” Amell expressed to EW. “I genuinely hope that happens, as I admire his character, and I believe that dynamic would captivate the audience.”
Amell noted that Macht, 52, was his choice for a guest appearance from the original cast, only a month after speculation emerged regarding Harvey’s return. Macht teased his return in an Instagram post in November, showing off an outfit featuring a shirt embroidered with the initials “H.S.” and shoes with the name “Harvey” in the soles.
“When an old friend needs a hand,” he wrote in the caption. “It’s time to take care of things and make those very ‘things’ right.”
The original series, set in a fictional corporate law firm in New York City, followed associate lawyer Mike Ross (Patrick J. Adams), who began his career alongside Harvey Specter. The series, which aired from 2011 to 2019, revolved around the duo’s pursuit of justice while keeping Mike’s secret hidden.
The show’s popularity soared again in 2023 when it became available on Netflix and Peacock, leading NBC to create a spinoff featuring Amell, Josh McDermitt, Lex Scott Davis, and Bryan Greenberg.

“Our aim is to entertain and bring back fan-favorite elements,” Amell told EW. “The only reason we’re currently in the Black Lane Law group conference room is due to Gabriel, Patrick [J. Adams], Sarah [Rafferty], Meghan [Markle], Rick [Hoffman], and the rest of the original Suits cast. They are all welcome back.”
Amell emphasized the possibility for more guest appearances, stating, “While I don’t extend the invites, I’m open to all of them returning. … We’ll carve out our unique path, and that’s perfectly fine. We’ll explore themes and stories that the original series didn’t.”
Suits: LA is scheduled to premiere on NBC on February 23 at 9 p.m. ET
