Lacey Chabert Defends Wedding Twist in “Paris Is Always a Good Idea”
Hallmark’s Paris Is Always a Good Idea has taken book and romance enthusiasts by surprise with an unexpected wedding twist.
The initial three episodes suggested that Chelsea (Lacey Chabert) was reminiscing about her love story while recording a voice message on what seemed to be her wedding day. The hint that she was addressing Knightly (Scott Michael Foster) implied that he was likely her groom.
However, the latest episode, released on Thursday, August 13, indicated that Chelsea may not be walking down the aisle to Knightly after all. Her voice message ended with a suggestion that things may have gone wrong for the beloved couple.
Additionally, the wedding ceremony was taking place at a castle owned by Chelsea’s presumed ex, Marcos, adding to the confusion for viewers who thought they had the series figured out.
“Is she getting married? Who is it to? At this point, it doesn’t seem like it’s Knightly,” Chabert, 43, exclusively revealed about the upcoming developments. “One of my favorite aspects of the script was the element of surprise — and I had read the book.”
Chabert is eager for viewers to experience “a touch of mystery.”
“Even though we had six episodes, which was wonderful for extra depth, it’s still only six episodes,” she teased. “It could have even been longer.”
Chabert continued: “To conclude everyone’s storylines, I believe it’s a truly satisfying ending that brings closure and makes full circles in ways that I think our audience will appreciate.”
Based on Jenn McKinlay’s book of the same name, Paris Is Always a Good Idea follows nonprofit executive Chelsea, who travels to Paris with rival Knightly to secure a donation. Inspired by a message from her late mother, along with support from her family, Chelsea decides to revisit three past loves across Ireland, Paris, and Spain.
“I can’t speak for the book fans, but I believe they will be pleased with this adaptation,” Chabert said regarding how the limited series brought McKinlay’s novel to life.
Chabert hinted that there were “some alterations necessary for the adaptation,” adding, “But I think it’s such a rich story. The characters that captivated readers in the book are represented brilliantly in this adaptation.”
The actress also discussed Knightly’s unexpected choice to let Chelsea reconnect with her affluent ex.
“The scene where Knightly encourages Chelsea to visit Marcos was the very first scene we filmed for the series. It’s incredibly complex because at this juncture they have acknowledged their feelings for each other,” Chabert explained. “My character finally lets her guard down and opens her heart. It was a nuanced, intricate scene.”
Chabert appreciated the twist, stating, “She is a woman who cannot leave any stone unturned. I admire that Knightly understands this and recognizes her need for closure, even if she doesn’t realize it herself. That scene illustrates how he knows her better than she knows herself. Their connection runs deep.”
