Leanne Morgan’s Netflix Sitcom: Tackling Weight Loss and Eating Disorder Humor

Viewers tuning in to Leanne Morgan’s sitcom, Leanne, can expect plenty of humor related to weight and body image.

The inaugural season follows a Tennessee woman who is reinventing her life after her husband leaves her for another woman. The series draws inspiration from Morgan’s stand-up routines.

“Leanne employs humor as a coping mechanism,” Morgan shared with Netflix’s Tudum in July 2025. “Sometimes, laughter is the best way to prevent tears. She relies on her support network — her family, close friends, and church — to navigate this difficult journey.”

As the lead actress, cocreator, and executive producer, Morgan expressed her excitement about transitioning her comedic content into a scripted format, stating, “This is a dream I’ve had since childhood, and it’s as exhilarating as I always imagined.”

The fall 2025 TV schedule is packed — but do you know when your favorite show returns? CBS’ Blue Bloods fans are eager for Donnie Wahlberg’s Boston Blue spinoff. Since its premiere in 2010, Blue Bloods has gained a solid fanbase, and after 14 seasons, viewers are reluctant to say farewell […]

Morgan added: “Adapting to a new medium was certainly a challenge — memorizing new scripts week after week was completely foreign to me — but I thoroughly enjoyed it. In stand-up, the comedic timing felt instinctual, and filming before a live audience was particularly comfortable. By the end of the season, it truly felt like home.”

Although the show has moments of heart, the countless jokes about eating disorders and physical appearance are hard to overlook. Read on for a breakdown:

In the premiere, Leanne joked about how she “will always take a laxative” to cope with her husband’s departure. Later, she mentioned she would “keep on and return to Weight Watchers.”

Before the episode concluded, Leanne quipped about the differences between herself and her daughter, saying, “I took a buttload of Dexatrim before I knew I was pregnant with her” and wondered why she wasn’t losing weight.

Episode 2

Leanne’s father suggested that her sister, Carol (Kristen Johnston), should be the one “counting calories” since she is single.

Episode 3

After a night out with Carol, Leanne confessed she was trying to hide her stomach at the restaurant.

“Quit the body-shaming,” Carol said, to which Leanne retorted, “Well, I am ashamed of my body.”

Episode 4

Leanne reminisced about appearing in her estranged husband’s first late-night TV commercial “before the babies — when eating disorders weren’t viewed negatively like they are today.” Later, she compared herself to a “pelican with a mahi-mahi in my throat,” prompting Carol to suggest a “nip tuck” for Leanne’s self-esteem.

Episode 5

After hearing that Bill’s (Ryan Stiles) mistress was expecting, Leanne remarked she had “seven months to get skinny” while his new girlfriend “gets fat.” This motivated Leanne to go on a diet consisting solely of bone broth and calorie counting.

“If I’m going to boost my self-esteem, starvation is where I’ll start,” she told Carol.

Episode 7

During a gynecologist visit, Leanne asked her doctor to “shave a couple of pounds” off her final weight. Her OBGYN emphasized that her weight was “normal for a woman her age,” but Leanne still wanted to check her weight again for a lower number.

Episode 8

Leanne accidentally drank Carol’s Metamucil and later quipped that the appetite suppressant helped her “drop a size.”

Episode 9

In the second half of the season, Leanne described achieving “goal weight” as a natural high before declaring she had “given up carbs.” Meanwhile, Mary (Jayma Mays) noted her weight of 97 pounds.

Episode 10

Bill teased Carol by asking if she had “gained weight,” specifically around her neck.
