Meghan Trainor Expresses ‘Jealousy’ Over Not Being Able to Have a Third Baby
Meghan Trainor and her spouse, Daryl Sabara, welcomed their third child earlier this year, but selecting surrogacy was not an easy journey.
The pop star, 32, shared her thoughts on the decision during an interview on the Thursday, April 9, episode of Kylie Kelce’s “Not Gonna Lie” podcast, revealing the complex emotions she experienced regarding the situation.
“It was intense. There was a lot of heartbreak and significant decision-making involved. I was struggling with health issues and was close to developing an autoimmune disease, so there were numerous conversations back and forth. Eventually, we concluded that ‘the safest route is to use a surrogate,’ especially since my babies tend to be sideways,” she explained, adding that doctors warned her she could require another C-section. “And I felt like, ‘My body hasn’t fully recovered from the previous ones.’”
Trainor elaborated that “many factors” influenced her and Sabara, 33, to pursue surrogacy.
“I was also scared and felt jealous that I wasn’t carrying my baby,” she confessed. “My husband is a bit of a control freak, so every day knowing she was alive inside someone else made us go, ‘Is she OK?’ It drove us a bit crazy.”
The couple, who married in 2018, already have sons Riley, 5, and Bruce, 2. They welcomed their daughter, Mikey, on January 18.
Despite her mixed feelings about surrogacy, Trainor ultimately built a wonderful relationship with the woman who carried Mikey.
“There’s a lot involved, but we had an amazing surrogate who took great care of us and kept us updated all the time,” the “All About That Bass” artist shared. “I was worried about bothering her too much … and she was a real champ.”
Trainor mentioned that she has kept in touch with the surrogate, who recently informed her that her postpartum recovery was going well. The Grammy winner has also been sharing pictures of Mikey with the surrogate.
While Trainor admitted that the surrogacy experience was “wild,” she has no regrets about her decision to grow her family this way.
“It was scary; we cried a lot, but it turned out to be the best option for our family,” she explained. “One noticeable difference is not having to heal from a C-section with a newborn. I could be fully present with her and my other kids, without worrying about them jumping on me or not being able to lift them.”
Concerning the social media backlash regarding her surrogate choice, Trainor responded bluntly: “They can suck my ass.”
She previously discussed why she chose surrogacy, stating it wasn’t her “first choice” for having a third child, but it was the “safest” route for her family.
“I want people to understand that surrogacy is simply another wonderful way to build a family,” she told People in January. “It’s not something to be ashamed of or judge. It stems from trust, science, love, and teamwork. Every family’s journey is unique, and all are completely valid.”
