Mykelti from Sister Wives Discusses How Plural Family Life Influences Parenting
Growing up in a polygamous family has significantly influenced how Mykelti Brown chooses to raise her own children.
“A friendly reminder from a new mom who learned about motherhood from five different women but still felt entirely unprepared: if you’re feeling lost trying to find your own parenting style that resonates, you’re not alone,” Brown, 29, shared in a social media video on Saturday, April 11. “In a plural family, there isn’t just one parenting model. You absorb aspects from five different models.”
Mykelti is one of Kody Brown’s daughters from Christine Brown. Kody, 57, previously had spiritual marriages with Christine, 53, Janelle Brown, Meri Brown, and Robyn Brown. In 2014, Kody legally divorced Meri, 55, to marry Robyn, 47, and adopt her three children from a prior relationship. Since then, Christine, Meri, and Janelle, 56, have separated from Kody, who is currently in a monogamous relationship with Robyn.
During Kody’s time practicing polygamy, all of his wives and their 18 children resided in the same neighborhood. After leaving the plural lifestyle, Mykelti married Antonio Padron in 2016. They welcomed their daughter Avalon in 2021, followed by twins Archer and Ace in 2022.
As Mykelti started her motherhood journey, she reflected on how Christine, Meri, Janelle, and Robyn managed their households.
“[There are] various rules, different degrees of warmth, and unique expectations based on whose day it was,” she recalled on Saturday. “Then you have your own child, and it’s not just the parenting choices that feel challenging. It’s also figuring out which version of mom you want to be.”
Mykelti expressed, “Suddenly, you’re holding your baby and thinking, ‘I really don’t know whose example to follow.’”
In her caption, Mykelti further noted that “growing up in polygamy” added complexity to both her childhood and motherhood experiences.
Though Mykelti still feels uncertain about her parenting approach, her followers showed immense support in the comments.
“The fact that you put this much thought into it is evidence that you’re doing a fantastic job,” one user commented. “Half of being a good parent is being present in their lives, and the other half is being willing to grow and evolve alongside your children. You’re excelling at both!”
Another follower added, “As a mom of six, I quickly learned to trust my instincts rather than heed others’ advice. If you follow your gut, you can’t go wrong.”
