Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban: A Relationship Story in Their Own Words
Since their first encounter in 2005, Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban have formed a bond that seems unbreakable, beginning when Urban found the courage to reach out to the Oscar-winning actress.
After their initial call, the couple began a deep conversation that led to their marriage just a year later. Now celebrating 18 years of marriage, they are the proud parents of two daughters, Sunday Rose and Faith Margaret.
In an interview on TODAY back in 2020, Kidman expressed her admiration for Urban.
“I’m married to a really good man,” she told Jenna Bush Hager from TODAY.
The couple is no strangers to glamorous events, with their first major appearance together at the Academy Awards happening in 2008.
They are anticipated to appear together at the upcoming 2025 Golden Globes on January 5, where Kidman is nominated for Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Motion Picture (Drama) for her role in “Babygirl.”
This R-rated film features Kidman as a powerful CEO who embarks on a passionate affair with a significantly younger intern, portrayed by Harris Dickinson, jeopardizing her career and marriage.
The last time they attended the Golden Globes was in 2020.

Kidman felt a spark for Urban when they first crossed paths in 2005
During her 2017 visit to “The Ellen DeGeneres Show,” Kidman shared her feelings of infatuation upon first meeting Urban at an event in Los Angeles. She recalled having a “crush” on him at the 2005 G’Day USA Gala (she also mentioned once having a crush on Jimmy Fallon, but that’s a separate tale).
“I remember thinking how much I liked him, but he didn’t seem interested in me,” she recounted. “It’s true! He didn’t call me for four months.”
Urban posted a picture on Instagram, showing them together just minutes after their introduction.
What led to the wait? Urban felt Kidman was ‘out of his league’
When asked about the delay in calling, Urban revealed during an interview with Andrew Denton on the Australian show “Interview” in 2018 that he believed Kidman was beyond his reach.
“I felt she was way out of my league,” he admitted. “While I can dream big when it comes to possibilities, I never imagined someone like her would be interested in me.”
The “Wild Hearts” artist recalled meeting Kidman during a challenging time in his life. After a friend passed along her number, Urban felt paralyzed. “I kept staring at it thinking, ‘If I dial this number, she’s going to answer, and I don’t even know what to say,’” he narrated.
Urban mentioned that he was struggling with self-confidence at the time. “I wasn’t in a very healthy mindspace and never imagined she would find anything appealing about a guy like me,” he expressed.
However, when he finally dialed her number, the conversation flowed effortlessly. “We just started chatting, and it kept going; it felt so natural,” he recounted.
The couple tied the knot in 2006, and Kidman remembers the moment she decided she wanted to marry Urban
Urban and Kidman exchanged vows in June 2006 in a Sydney ceremony, as reported by People.
Reflecting back in 2019 to People, Kidman recounted the pivotal moment, six months into their relationship, when she realized she wanted Urban to be her husband.
On her 38th birthday, Urban stood on her doorstep at 5 a.m. holding gardenias, which made her think, “This is the man I hope to marry,” she said.
Years later, Urban commemorated their 15th anniversary with a heartfelt Instagram post, stating, “My life began when you said ‘I do’ 5475 days ago.”
Urban praises Kidman as an ‘incredible mother’ to their children
Kidman and Urban are parents to two daughters: Sunday and Faith. (Kidman is also the mother of Isabella and Connor, whom she adopted with her former husband Tom Cruise.)
Sunday and Faith recently joined their parents on the red carpet for the 49th AFI Lifetime Achievement Award Gala at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles on April 27, 2024.
The family attended alongside Kidman’s sister, Antonia Kidman, and her husband Craig Marran.
Kidman’s nieces Sybella Hawley, Lucia Hawley, and nephew Alexander Kidman Marran were also present at the event.
In an interview with People in 2019, Kidman shared her desire for more children with Urban, wishing they had met earlier.
“We often say, ‘If only we had met at 25, we could’ve had 10 kids together!’” Kidman said. “But Keith urges me to enjoy what we have and be grateful for it.”
Urban considers himself ‘fortunate’ to have Kidman by his side throughout his sobriety journey
In a 2016 interview with Rolling Stone, Urban candidly discussed his struggles with substance abuse and the pivotal role Kidman played in his recovery.
Just four months after their wedding, Kidman organized an intervention for Urban, who had previously undergone rehab twice according to Rolling Stone. Following the intervention, Urban checked into the Betty Ford Clinic and has maintained his sobriety for over 15 years.
“I feel incredibly lucky to have Nic initiate that intervention. I had a supportive group of friends around me during that time,” Urban shared with Rolling Stone. Reflecting on the experience during a conversation with Oprah on the “Oprah Winfrey Show” in 2010, Urban remarked that the intervention “was executed with such genuine love that it was the right moment.”
Urban acknowledged that it was a miracle his marriage survived this tumultuous period, but he emerged revitalized and “spiritually awakened.”
“I describe it as ‘being reborn into her’, and that’s the feeling I have. For the first time, I was able to shed the chains of addiction,” Urban explained.
In a 2019 interview, Kidman reflected to People: “True love is tested not during the good times, but when facing adversity.”
After the passing of her father, Kidman said Urban ‘supported (her) through’
Kidman’s father, Dr. Antony Kidman, unexpectedly passed away in 2014 while visiting her sister Antonia in Singapore, according to reports from Australian news outlet ABC.
In a subsequent appearance on “The Ellen DeGeneres Show,” Kidman described going through a “very difficult period,” and noted Urban’s incredible support during this time.
“When you have a partner who lifts you through hardship … He was truly amazing for me,” Kidman expressed to DeGeneres. “Having my husband stand strong for me makes me emotional. I would do anything for him.”
Urban ‘remains uninvolved’ in Kidman’s professional life
In her acting career, Kidman sometimes needs to perform intimate scenes with co-stars. However, Urban has no qualms about this aspect of her profession.
“My husband is an artist too, so he gets it, and he doesn’t involve himself in it,” Kidman explained to E! News.
“He views the final product after editing, and then he has a fresh perspective. He doesn’t read any scripts and isn’t privy to what goes on the set; he’s deeply engaged in his own career,” she noted.
Kidman surprises Urban onstage — and they shine on red carpets
Urban shared a video on Instagram capturing the moment Kidman joined him on stage during a performance in Las Vegas in May 2022.
The couple frequently appears together on the red carpet. In 2022, Kidman received a Best Actress nomination at the 94th Academy Awards for her portrayal of Lucille Ball in “Being the Ricardos,” which was also nominated for Best Picture.
Urban demonstrated his support for his wife through a tweet celebrating her nomination: “You gave it everything,” he remarked.
In April 2024, Kidman was awarded the AFI Lifetime Achievement Award, and Urban stood proudly by her side.
Kidman and Urban were also joined by their teenage daughters, who appeared to make their red carpet debut that evening alongside their parents.
In October 2024, Kidman honored Urban’s 57th birthday by actively supporting him as he contributed to victims of Hurricane Helene in North Carolina.
“We headed to Charlotte, North Carolina, to take part in the ‘Concert for Carolina,’ where we collectively raised $24.5 million for those affected, which is truly remarkable — a collaborative effort,” Urban shared during an interview on TODAY on October 30, 2024.
