Off-Campus Star Hints at What Season 2 Will ‘Sacrifice’ Due to Changes
Off Campus star Mika Abdalla has shared insights on the significant shifts viewers can expect in season 2 following some unexpected onscreen developments.
“This season is packed with more emotional intensity, which means we lose a bit of that lighthearted, best-friend vibe,” Abdalla, 26, explained to Vogue India in an article published on Tuesday, September 1.
She added: “I make sure to check in on key character moments while also preserving the beloved traits of Allie.”
Inspired by the Off-Campus book series by Elle Kennedy, the popular Prime Video series follows an elite ice hockey team and the women in their lives. Season 1, which debuted in May, revolved around Hannah (Ella Bright) and Garrett’s (Belmont Cameli) romantic journey.
The series has consistently resonated with audiences on Prime Video, navigating significant transformations including cast departures and other impactful changes. Based on Elle Kennedy’s book series, Off Campus chronicles the lives of an elite ice hockey team and the women who love them, as they face love, heartbreak, and personal growth while forging deep friendships.
In line with the order of Kennedy’s publications, it was initially expected that Logan’s (Antonio Cipriano) story would follow, before moving on to Dean (Stephen Kalyn) and Tucker (Jalen Thomas Brooks). However, it was revealed that Dean and Allie (Abdalla) will be at the forefront of season 2 instead.
“This season [is] akin to the first. Season 1 didn’t adhere strictly to the books either,” Abdalla shared on a June episode of the “Hey Jonas!” podcast. “We’re introducing some exciting new elements and fun surprises.”
Abdalla previously emphasized that the series aims to preserve the essence of Allie and Dean’s romance.
“Though we do tease Dean and Allie earlier than expected, you’ll still find yourself craving more,” she exclusively told Us in May. “That’s what excites me the most; you’ll want to see more of their journey.”
She noted: “The interconnection of Allie and Hannah’s storylines made it essential to incorporate elements from all the books. They’re all related to one another.”
Additional alterations for season 2 include Josh Heuston‘s departure as Justin.
“He won’t be returning next season, but I love Josh and would definitely bring Justin back if the opportunity arises,” creator Louisa Levy stated to TV Guide earlier this year. “We didn’t have the chance to introduce Stella, the character he ends up with in the book, so there’s a possibility he could reappear in a future season.”
Levy emphasized that Justin’s absence wasn’t part of the original plan. “Though he’s not available for next season, I won’t rule out anything,” she added.
With Justin’s exit, Levy hinted at how season 2 will evolve.
“The live performances are going to be fewer since we won’t be able to delve into Hannah’s songwriting journey,” she mentioned during Obsessed Fest in June. “With the absence of Josh and After Hours this season, we won’t have those bands. However, there will still be plenty of other musical elements; light music will continue to feature throughout the show.”
Levy concluded with: “I still believe the core of the series is rooted in those pivotal musical moments that enhance scenes, alongside the score.”
