Outer Banks Universe: Your Guide from Kildare to The Runarounds
Outer Banks is drawing to a close, but its fictional universe is expanding with plans for both a prequel and a spinoff.
This popular Netflix series, which debuted in 2020, showcased the rivalry between two teen factions in a North Carolina coastal town. The story primarily centered on the Kooks, the affluent residents, and the Pogues, who are the working-class locals. Their ongoing quest for a hidden treasure fueled their conflict while also highlighting the strong bonds formed among the central friend group.
With its success, Outer Banks propelled stars such as Chase Stokes, Madelyn Cline, Madison Bailey, Jonathan Daviss, Rudy Pankow, Drew Starkey, Carlacia Grant, and Austin North into the spotlight, but Netflix announced in November 2024 that season 5 will be the show’s final chapter.
“We’re thrilled for season 5, and we’re eager to explore additional narratives set in this universe,” the executive producers shared in an interview with Deadline regarding the show’s future. While they refrained from providing specifics, reports suggest that current projects are not underway, but various spin-offs are under consideration.
Additionally, fans are already aware of The Runarounds, a series ordered by Prime Video that will center around a teen band that originated within Outer Banks. Meanwhile, Netflix is set to continue with its treasure-hunting theme through a proposed prequel titled Kildare.

‘Outer Banks’
Since its premiere in 2020, Outer Banks rapidly captured the hearts of its audience, continually setting streaming records for Netflix. The show made headlines leading up to its final season by making the bold choice to kill off fan-favorite character JJ, played by Pankow.
‘The Runarounds’
Based on a teleplay by Jonas Pate and David Wilcox, this fictional series will spotlight the real band sharing the same name, featuring William Lipton, Axel Ellis, Jeremy Yun, Zendé Murdock, and Jesse Golliher.
Fans of Outer Banks might recall The Runarounds appearing in an episode in 2023, where they performed at Kiara’s (Bailey) parents’ anniversary party.
Pate announced in December 2024 that Prime Video had already commissioned a second season even before the show had premiered.
‘Kildare’
Pate disclosed in December 2024 that he is currently writing a prequel named Kildare for Outer Banks. This new series is still in its infancy but will showcase a fresh cast of young actors and delve into the origins of the various groups depicted in the show’s fictional Figure 8 town.
