Ryan Hurst Replaced in God of War Series Following Severe Injury
Prime Video’s God of War will be recasting a lead role following an injury to star Ryan Hurst on set.
On Friday, July 17, multiple sources confirmed that Hurst, 50, had previously torn a bicep while performing a stunt. He has undergone surgery and is currently recovering after filming scenes as Kratos. Due to the severity of Hurst’s injury, the role will now be taken over by a new actor, as reported by Deadline.
News first emerged in January that Hurst was joining the cast, which includes Callum Vinson, who portrays Kratos’ son, Atreus. Production on the series, which has been renewed for two seasons, began in Vancouver in February.
God of War follows the journey of “father and son Kratos and Atreus as they endeavor to spread the ashes of their wife and mother, Faye,” according to the official synopsis.
The synopsis continued: “Throughout their adventures, Kratos endeavors to teach his son to be a better god, while Atreus seeks to guide his father towards being a better human.”
The cast features Mandy Patinkin as Odin, Ed Skrein as Baldur, and Teresa Palmer as Sif. Other cast members include Max Parker, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson, Alastair Duncan, Jeff Gulka, and Danny Woodburn.
Prior to God of War, Hurst appeared in The Abandons, The Walking Dead, and Outsiders. He is also known for his role as Opie on Sons of Anarchy.
Recently, TV shows have made headlines for recasting significant characters, including the spinoff Boston Blue and FBI’s CIA. In April 2025, CBS greenlit CIA as a straight-to-series order featuring Tom Ellis and Nick Gehlfuss. Initially scheduled for a fall 2025 debut, CIA was postponed to midseason after Warren Leight took over as showrunner from David Hudgins of FBI: Most Wanted.
The shifts continued when Michael Michele, a lead in the series, exited in November 2025. Soon after, Eriq La Salle stepped down as executive producer, having been involved with CIA since its inception and directing the pilot before his departure. CIA has since been renewed for a second season on CBS.
Boston Blue has already replaced Donnie Wahlberg’s onscreen son. The spinoff, which debuted in October 2025, began with Danny (Wahlberg) visiting Boston after Sean (Mika Amonsen) fell into a coma. This rendition of Sean differed slightly, having been previously played by Andrew Terraciano.
Meanwhile, on ABC, Scott Speedman’s new show R.J. Decker features Jaina Lee Ortiz of Station 19 as a regular. She portrays Emi Ochoa, a “shrewd-if-unpredictable daughter of a very powerful and corrupt state senator” with connections to RJ’s (Speedman) past.
The character, initially named Shay Bennett and played by Weruche Opia in the pilot, was announced to be recast after the show was picked up. Aside from Speedman and Ortiz, RJ Decker also stars Kevin Rankin, Adelaide Clemens, and Bevin Bru.
