Shawn Hatosy Discusses the Mohan-Abbot Link Following His Departure from Pitt
The connection between Mohan and Abbot on The Pitt is genuine — it’s not merely a fan creation.
Shawn Hatosy (Abbot) suggested that the tension between his character and Supriya Ganesh’s Mohan “wasn’t fabricated” during an interview with Variety, which was released on Monday, June 8.
“Supriya and I were informed that we might not know exactly what it is, but there’s something there, and it’s evident in the writing,” he recalled. “We didn’t delve into it, but having an underlying element really adds energy to this attraction, or whatever one chooses to call it.”
Ganesh, 28, also shared her thoughts with Variety, admitting that she initially did not see the Mohan–Abbot connection.
“I remember thinking, ‘No way,’” she reflected. “Then, after some contemplation, I began to see it. Both are incredibly lonely; they’re both stunted in their unique ways. They invest a significant amount into their work, which brings them closer together.”
Hatosy was the first cast member to allude to a potential romance between the characters during a May 2025 interview with Variety.
“There was a line in the first episode that got cut where someone commented that she’s slow, and I replied, ‘She’s the smartest person here.’ Just from that, it felt to me like it was definitely heading in a specific direction,” Hatosy reminisced. “I believe he has feelings for her, based purely on what I observed in the script.”
Viewers anticipated more development between Mohan and Abbot after a memorable season 2 moment where she tended to the shirtless doctor following a bullet grazing. However, with Ganesh’s recent announcement of her departure, the future for these two characters remains uncertain.
As season 2 of The Pitt concluded earlier this year, it became apparent that Ganesh was being written out — for now, at least. She candidly discussed the online response to her departure in a Variety interview last month.
“I had to step back a bit, as it’s all felt surreal,” she said. “The day the news broke, I noticed my name trending on Twitter and thought, ‘I need to put the phone down and get outside.’ Honestly, I haven’t tracked it closely, but I’ve received so many sweet and lovely messages from people. It’s surprising to see how much they love the character and how they relate to her, which I will truly miss.”
In her absence, a new romantic interest for Abbot may be on the horizon. Fans are speculating about a potential pairing with Dr. Baran Al-Hashimi (Sepideh Moafi).
“Abbot seems to form connections with everyone because he’s quite the flirt,” Hatosy, 50, shared with Variety on Monday. “In my understanding of Abbot, he’s still navigating the grief of losing his wife, so he hasn’t gone that route yet. But sure, it could be Al-Hashimi. We’ll see!”
