Yellowstone’s Marshals: Shock Twist as Riley Green Meets His End
Yellowstone‘s spinoff, Marshals, continued to deliver shocking moments as another key character met their demise in a surprising twist.
In the episode that aired on Sunday, May 10, Kayce (Luke Grimes) was still grappling with the consequences of the attack on his ranch while confronting a new threat from his past. The storyline unfolded from the aftermath of a prison bus crash, with Kayce and Cal (Logan Marshall-Green) on a mission to capture the last escaped inmate.
Their adventure took them down memory lane to their days as US Navy SEALs, bringing back memories of Garrett (Riley Green), who was part of their squad. Through flashbacks, viewers—and Kayce—discovered that it was actually Garrett who declared another squad member dead during a mission, which halted lifesaving assistance, not Cal as previously thought. This decision ultimately led to the tragic death of their friend.
Meanwhile, Garrett was recovering in the hospital after the fire incident at Kayce’s ranch. Despite suffering second-degree burns and severe smoke inhalation, he appeared to be on the mend. However, when Kayce, Cal, and Andrea (Ash Santos) returned later to check on him, they received the heartbreaking news of his passing.
Marshals marked Green’s acting debut, with him featuring in several episodes this season.
“I’m thrilled to join the cast of Marshals. Being on set with my friend Luke Grimes made the experience truly unforgettable,” Green expressed in a statement in February. “This is my first venture into acting, and I couldn’t have asked for a better introduction to this world.”
Garrett’s death wasn’t the only shocking moment this season on Marshals. Fans of Yellowstone were stunned to learn that Kayce’s wife, Monica (Kelsey Asbille), had died off-screen after battling cancer when the series premiered in March.
“Kayce had such a perfect ending in Yellowstone,” showrunner Spencer Hudnut told TVLine in March. “His dreams were finally realized. While figuring out the next chapter in Kayce’s journey, it felt important to jolt him from that place. Tragically, Kayce’s life has a way of attracting misfortune, and something unfortunate was bound to happen, which turned out to be Monica’s fate.”
Hudnut stated that Monica’s death will play a significant role in Kayce’s journey, adding, “In my view, Monica is guiding Kayce in this first episode, helping him navigate his new path. If you look closely, Tate attends that rally to honor his mother, and Kayce goes to protect him. Had it not been for Monica, Kayce might never have found himself in that position or discovered this new direction.”
He concluded: “We aimed to respectfully say goodbye to her. I also didn’t want to overshadow the ending of Yellowstone, which was beautifully done. Unfortunately, real-life events intervened.”
Marshals airs on CBS Sundays at 8 p.m. ET.
