SVU’s Aime Donna Kelly Discusses Cast Changes and Kelli Giddish’s Comeback (Exclusive)
Law & Order: Special Victims Unit is gearing up for season 27 with significant cast changes, and star Aimé Donna Kelly is excited for fans to witness how these shifts alter the show’s dynamics.
The actress has been officially promoted to a series regular, revealing to Us Weekly that she “cried” upon receiving the news, indicating viewers will be seeing much more of Captain Renee Curry.
“This is so emotional on various levels. I feel fortunate to have started as a guest star. I’m familiar with the squad, the people, the crew, and the set,” Kelly shared with Us ahead of the season 27 premiere on Thursday, September 25. “It really feels like home, but being promoted is indescribable. It feels like I’ve finally been accepted into this family I’ve longed to be part of.”
Fans can expect Kelly’s character, Curry, to interact with Mariska Hargitay as Captain Olivia Benson, and the dynamic gets even better with the return of the “fantastic” Kelli Giddish as Amanda Rollins.
“It feels like another family member is back home after college. It’s like, ‘Yes, this is how it should be,’” Kelly enthused. “We each bring our own strengths and vibes to the squad.”
She continued, “To see three women face these monumental challenges in cases is truly heartfelt and emotional; it’s beautiful to witness and to be part of. It’s amazing.”
Although Kelly couldn’t divulge specifics about Octavio Pisano’s exit or the rumors surrounding the return of original cast members, she hinted at the ups and downs that Benson and the SVU team will navigate this season. (SVU showrunner Michele Fazekas recently told People that Benson will encounter “some challenges in season 27.”)
“If our leader is facing difficulties, then we are all affected. We’re here to support her,” Kelly stated. “In tonight’s episode, things escalate, and it’s very thrilling. That’s why I’m so eager to see it.”
Even though she’s aware of the unfolding events, the actress is keen to see the final version of the show’s premiere on Thursday.
“We all feel a bit of that tension, and while I can’t share too much, things heat up,” she added.
Regarding her character, Kelly mentioned that fans will witness Curry’s “beautiful growth” on screen. (Kelly first appeared during season 22 as an Internal Affairs Bureau officer before transferring to SVU in season 25.)
“She’s beginning to show a bit more sass,” Kelly noted. “I believe she’s becoming more comfortable and assertive as a leader. Working in IAB was a solo endeavor. This is the first time I’m working with a larger crew, and it feels fantastic.”
She added, “It’s comforting to know that the person next to you has your back. With that comes more freedom and ease.”
Law & Order: SVU airs new episodes on NBC Thursdays at 9 p.m. ET.
