Sheriff Country Showrunner Reveals Surprising Mom Twist and Cast Changes

Sheriff Country reached a thrilling conclusion with a surprising twist about a mother — what’s in store for season 2?

In the season 1 finale aired on Friday, May 22, Mickey (Morena Baccarin) confronted Alec (Wes Chatham) after uncovering that her boyfriend and DEA agent was secretly aligned with Miranda (Kelli O’Hara). Subsequently, she was tasked by Eva (Rachel Ticotin), the Deputy Director of the DEA, to collaborate with her estranged father, Wes (W. Earl Brown).

Wes was called in to discuss his role as a confidential informant, but things took an unexpected turn when he recognized Eva as Mickey’s mother — who was believed to be deceased.

“In the pilot of season 1, we’re informed that Mickey’s mother has died, and it’s explicitly clear she’s out of the picture. One of the writers suggested early on in season 1 that she was secretly alive, which I initially dismissed,” showrunner Matt Lopez revealed exclusively to Us Weekly. “As the season progressed, more writers joined the idea. I was a late adopter because I didn’t want to introduce a twist just for impact. If it offers compelling storytelling and reveals something significant about the characters, and it’s rooted in real human emotion, then I’m all for it.”

Lopez is eager to explore this narrative in season 2.

“It reshapes our family dynamic, which is central to this show,” he hinted. “It also delves into the intriguing character complexities introduced. In the early episodes, Wes believes he and Mickey are united in feeling betrayed by this woman, but Mickey might not feel the same way. In many respects, one could argue that Wes’s betrayal was more significant. We’ll explore all of this.”

He further elaborated: “Since Mickey was around 5 or 6 years old, she hasn’t had her mother in her life, and who owes Mickey a larger debt of gratitude? Wes thought she was gone forever, and we will gradually reveal the entire story behind the decision to essentially fake her death. It’s quite entertaining with plenty of intriguing twists.”

Looking towards the future, Lopez mentioned that the return will “subvert expectations,” adding, “There will be a time jump, but we will also reveal what transpired in the scenes we missed. The emotional repercussions will extend beyond just one episode, and we’ve constructed an engaging dynamic where Mickey is barely communicating with her father, while their handler is the woman Mickey believed was dead for the past 30 years. It sets up a compelling premise right from the start.”

The cast will see some additions with Skye (Amanda Arcuri) and Hank (Ian Quinlan) receiving more screen time. When asked by Us about Baccarin’s husband, Ben McKenzie, expressing interest in a role on Sheriff Country, Lopez noted he recently shared a meal with the actor.

“I had lunch with him over the weekend and came in on Monday thinking, ‘Let’s come up with something for Ben.’ He might decline, and I’m not sure we can afford him, but that would be fantastic,” he teased.

As for Mickey’s relationship with Boone (Matt Lauria)? The actor and Lopez discussed what to anticipate in a separate interview with Us. Lopez is also developing a pilot for a medical drama set within the Fire Country and Sheriff Country universe.

“I would love the challenge of figuring out how to create a crossover among all three shows. There’s a natural connection between a hospital, fire station, and police station. What interests us, the studio, and the network about a medical show in this town is akin to how Mickey approaches law enforcement differently; how is healing patients approached in a unique way?” he shared with Us. “What makes our doctors and nurses’ practices distinct in a small town like Edgewater?”

Sheriff Country is currently available for streaming on Paramount+.
