Justin Hartley Discusses the Reasons Behind Tracker’s Relocation Amid Changes
Justin Hartley explained the reasons behind the changes made to Tracker for its fourth season.
“I think it’s important,” Hartley, 49, stated during an episode of the “I Am an Actor” podcast on Thursday, July 16, when discussing the show’s production shift from Vancouver to Los Angeles.
He acknowledged Vancouver’s role in establishing the show.
“We built a really great show in Vancouver. We had three wonderful years — a fantastic three-year run,” he remarked. “Our story allows our character to travel from city to city across the United States as he searches for missing individuals.”
He added: “It’s incredibly uplifting. It provides fulfillment, and viewers feel good while watching it. There’s this heartfelt element at the end.”
Following three seasons in Vancouver, it was announced in May that Tracker received $48 million out of $129 million in qualified expenditures, leading to its relocation.
Tracker is the largest series from 20th Television returning to California with assistance from a tax credit. Previously, Prime Video’s Fallout shifted from New York to Los Angeles, while Dan Fogelman’s forthcoming NFL drama, The Land, was allocated a $42.8 million tax credit.
Tax credits for relocation are granted to productions based on their anticipated significant economic impact, creating jobs for local crews in Los Angeles and benefiting nearby businesses.
TV shows may receive an additional 5 percent tax credit bonus — on top of the 35 percent base credit — for qualified expenditures made outside the 30-mile zone encompassing the Greater Los Angeles area and its surroundings, as reported by Deadline.
“Location plays a significant role in the storytelling of Tracker,” showrunner Elwood Reid mentioned to Deadline. “We’re extremely thankful to the crew and community in Vancouver who contributed to the first three seasons of this successful drama, and we’re equally excited to launch the fourth season of Tracker in Los Angeles, facilitated by the tax incentive program that encourages production to return to California.”
Tracker has been renewed for a fourth season and is available for streaming on Paramount+.
