Emma Roberts’ Son Gave Her Away at the Wedding in His Father’s Absence
Emma Roberts is sharing personal insights about her wedding day after her father, Eric Roberts, revealed he did not attend the ceremony.
Emma, 35, was escorted down the aisle by her son, Rhodes, 5, during her wedding on July 24 in Sun Valley, Idaho, to Cody John, as highlighted in photos released by Vogue the following week.
In a poignant portrait, Emma held onto Rhodes’ arm as they approached John, 36, at the end of the aisle. (Emma shares Rhodes with her previous partner Garrett Hedlund.)
“A picture is worth a thousand words — and in this case, a million,” the American Horror Story star mentioned alongside an image capturing the heartfelt mother-son moment.
Emma and John exchanged vows in a cozy ceremony held on the groom’s family ranch on the outskirts of Sun Valley, which the Aquamarine star described as her “happy place.” Just a day before, the newlyweds hosted a welcome dinner at the beloved Roundhouse eatery atop Bald Mountain, where guests ascended via gondola.
“All guests rode a gondola up to the summit. I went up with Cody, my mom [Kelly Cunningham], and my son Rhodes, which was a lovely moment before the festivities,” Emma shared with the outlet about her pre-wedding activities. “Everyone departed with L.L. Bean goodie bags customized with ‘hitched’ on the side, containing a Wythe custom hat inside. It was great fun to see people wearing them throughout the weekend. Some even at the wedding!”
Emma and John were celebrated by their celebrity friends and family, including the actress’ mom and her aunt Julia Roberts.
“I love you, Aunt Julia,” Emma captioned a Vogue portrait with her 58-year-old aunt, who attended the celebration with her husband, Danny Moder.
Julia is one of Eric’s siblings, along with Lisa Roberts Gillian. Eric, 70, has had a historically complicated relationship with his daughter and was absent from the wedding.
“I love my daughter, always have, always will,” Eric expressed in a statement to Us on Monday, July 27, regarding his absence from Emma’s wedding. “It is perfectly wonderful for her to celebrate however she wishes, with whomever she chooses.”
Emma has not publicly commented on her apparent estrangement from her father or his absence from her special day, which she described to Vogue as feeling “like it was out of a book.”
“I feel like I’m always in a rush,” Emma remarked. “All my friends are always hurrying. My family, we’re always in a rush, so to experience everyone really disconnecting from their phones, being present, and having everyone I love in one space was an indescribable feeling. I couldn’t have dreamed it better.”
