Usha Vance Reveals Details About Her Newborn Son’s Secret Service Protection
Parenthood appears to have a unique twist for Vice President JD Vance and his wife Usha Vance as they welcome their fourth child.
“He has a Secret Service detail. None of our newborns had that before,” Usha, 40, noted regarding their 2-month-old son, Alec, during an interview with Daily Wire published on Tuesday, September 22.
“It’s a bit of an absurdity because he’s always attached to me,” the second lady confessed. “He’s never far from me.”
Alec marks the first baby born to a sitting vice president in over 150 years, following Schuyler Colfax III, who was born to Vice President Schuyler Colfax and his wife, Ellen Wade Colfax, during Ulysses S. Grant’s presidency in 1870.
“It’s different to consider whether people are watching when you’re facing the usual challenges any parent with a newborn deals with,” Usha reflected on raising Alec in the public eye. “However, people have been incredibly supportive.”
She added, “Either they don’t notice me because I think it’s unexpected to see me in their bagel shop or coffee shop or library — they’re not looking for me in that kind of setting. And when they do notice, it’s usually to offer congratulations or sweet remarks about the baby.”
Usha and JD, 42, revealed in January that they were expecting baby No. 4. (The couple also has children Ewan, 9, Vivek, 6, and Mirabel, 4.)
“We’re thrilled to share the news that Usha is pregnant with our fourth child, a boy,” they stated in a post shared on Instagram at the time. “Usha and the baby are doing well, and we are all looking forward to welcoming him in late July.”
Alec was born on July 19, with his parents sharing the announcement via X.
“We are excited to announce that our baby boy, Alec Neel Vance, was born this morning. Usha and the baby are both happy and healthy, and our kids are thrilled to meet their little brother,” their statement read. “We are incredibly thankful to the military doctors and staff at Walter Reed Medical Center and the White House Medical Unit for their immense support. They have been a blessing to our family.”
As the family adjusts to life with another newborn, Usha told Daily Wire that her older children are embracing their new big sibling roles quite well.
“[Mirabel] feels like she has received a promotion, so she’s really into it,” she shared on Tuesday, adding about Ewan, “He’s completely taken with his brother. He wants to do everything for him, always trying to hold him and even burping him.”
Usha also commended JD for striking a good balance between his fatherly responsibilities and his vice presidential role.
“Many people who work in this office have been incredibly devoted to ensuring that [JD’s] time as a father is safeguarded,” she explained. “He clearly prioritizes this, and he has made it known. Consequently, they go out of their way to ensure he can be present for breakfast.”
Usha concluded, “It’s fundamentally the same JD who was the father to the first three; he is just as involved with the fourth. It simply requires a small army behind him to enable that.”
