Natalie Martinez Discusses Portraying Matthew McConaughey’s Spouse
Natalie Martinez reveals the reality of portraying the imaginary spouse of Matthew McConaughey in the Apple TV comedy Brothers.
The series, which is “based on a true rumor” that Woody Harrelson, 65, and McConaughey, 56, could actually be related, takes a fictional spin on their legendary real-life friendship. Martinez, 42, drew inspiration for her character from McConaughey’s wife of 14 years, Camila Alves.
“I had the chance to talk and spend time with her a few times,” Martinez shared with Us about her interactions with the model and designer, 43, on set. “She exudes confidence and down-to-earth vibes, being comfortable in her own skin, and is simply stunning. I aimed to channel some of that into my character.”
The series delves into the familial relationships of the McConaughey and Harrelson families and highlights the actors’ long-standing friendship. Martinez points out that the whimsical storyline is rooted in reality.
“It originates from a very authentic and relatable place,” she explained. “During my scenes with Matthew, he would often say, ‘something like this actually happened!’ So, the show is significantly inspired by their real experiences.”
For Martinez, recognized for her roles in intense thrillers like Bad Monkey, transitioning to a light-hearted comedy was a welcomed change. “This is definitely a different experience, but I’m absolutely enjoying it,” the actress expressed. “It’s challenging me to step out of my comfort zone. … We don’t see family comedies showcasing genuine family dynamics as often anymore, especially with the world’s current stressors.”
The series includes playful nods to McConaughey and Harrelson’s cowboy and hippie personas (yes, there are bongos). Martinez notes that it becomes clear why they could easily be mistaken for actual siblings.
Matthew McConaughey’s spouse, Camila Alves, expressed her disbelief regarding the perception of her husband’s stoner-like character in Hollywood. “When we started dating, there was this image of Matthew — laid-back, often shirtless, and associating with getting high,” Alves, 41, shared during an episode of Southern Living’s “Biscuits & Jam” podcast.
“On set, we were able to witness a completely different side of them… Matthew and Woody, when together, truly showcase their bond and camaraderie. There was a scene where they played tennis, revealing their competitive nature; they truly resemble brothers! Their banter, teasing, and playful battles were highly entertaining,” she mentioned. “Working with them was genuinely a delight. They are just genuine, down-to-earth individuals.”
The production, largely set in a lavish home in the Austin area, allowed for familial connections among the cast. “Many scenes featured all of us, making those days incredibly fun as we would hang out, chat, and play games or make TikToks,” Martinez recounted to Us.
“Woody, along with his daughters and wife, would often come around. We’d engage in activities outside of shooting, like attending comedy shows or having dinners together,” she added. “Even the McConaughey family visited the set at times. … It was a great opportunity for quality time.”
