150 Questions to Get to Know Someone Without Making It an Interview

Getting to know someone is less about finding a perfect question than noticing whether the conversation feels welcome. These 150 original prompts range from easy small talk to optional personal reflection. Use them with a new friend, colleague or date, adapting the depth to the relationship.

Keep it conversational

Ask one question, listen to the answer and share something relevant yourself. Avoid firing off a checklist. An open question can invite a story, but a short answer is not an invitation to interrogate. The Gottman Institute’s discussion of open-ended conversation is written for partners; the broader habit of listening before asking the next question is useful here too.

Choose lighter subjects in work settings. Questions about income, health, religion, relationship status or family history can be intrusive, especially when someone cannot easily leave. A person may skip a question without explaining why. The deeper section below is optional, not the destination every conversation must reach.

Follow the answer, not the list

If someone mentions a hobby, ask what they enjoy about it rather than changing subjects immediately. If they seem uncomfortable, move on without labeling them guarded. End by acknowledging something you enjoyed hearing, not by announcing how well you think you now understand them. Familiarity grows through repeated respectful contact, not forced disclosure.
