Danny Replaces Partners in Boston Blue Spinoff Trailer Following Baez’s Departure from Blue Bloods

Danny Reagan will have a new partner in Boston Blue following Blue Bloods fans’ attachment to his relationship with Maria Baez.

CBS unveiled the first trailer for Boston Blue on Thursday, September 4. In the trailer, Danny (Donnie Wahlberg) relocates from New York to Boston. After pursuing a suspect, he’s instructed to halt his chase by Boston detective Lena Silver (Sonequa Martin-Green).

The two have a brief confrontation before becoming partners. Danny and Lena also appear to form a friendship, even sharing a Shabbat dinner with her family. However, Blue Bloods fans are aware that prior to his time in Boston, Danny had a strong bond with Baez (Marisa Ramirez).

According to CBS’s official synopsis, Danny seeks a fresh start in the Boston Blue spinoff after his son Sean — now portrayed by Mika Amonsen — becomes a Boston PD patrol officer.

“Sean committed himself to pursuing his family’s legacy but wanted to do so on his own terms, which meant joining a department outside of his hometown,” the character description noted. “Danny’s choice to remain in Boston offers this father-son duo an opportunity to reconnect on a deeper level.”

Wahlberg, 56, first portrayed Danny on CBS’s celebrated series Blue Bloods, which aired from 2010 to 2024. The last time viewers encountered Danny, he was receiving important personal advice from his grandfather Henry (Len Cariou).

“I always told you not to bring the job home,” Henry reminded Danny in the 2024 finale, highlighting that the “problem now is you have no one to bring it home to.” He urged Danny to promise he’d “find that someone” after the current case.

Danny took that advice seriously, seemingly asking his work partner, Baez, out for a date. “You wanna get a pizza?” he asked.

Before Boston Blue officially began production, Wahlberg conveyed to Fox News Digital in June that agreeing to Boston Blue was a “challenge,” adding, “I kept telling myself that if I genuinely want Blue Bloods to continue, this is my chance to do it.”

Wahlberg was also questioned about how Blue Bloods and Boston Blue might intersect.

CBS’ eagerly awaited spinoff, Boston Blue, is currently in development — but what do we know about the show so far? Blue Bloods, which started in 2010, followed the lives of the Reagan family, many of whom were part of the NYPD. Speculation about Blue Bloods ending emerged in 2023, when the […]

“The audience asks, ‘How do we maintain a Blue Bloods spinoff without the entire family?’” he noted. “I share that concern. How do we address it?”

The actor mentioned discussions regarding incorporating Boston Blue while honoring its Blue Bloods roots. Wahlberg continued, stating that any other Reagan family member is merely a “phone call away.”

“Now, it’s just Danny venturing into this new world, but I can’t disclose much — yet, I can say that if he’s a Reagan, it will never just be Danny,” he explained at that time. “There will always be a Reagan just a phone call away.”

Wahlberg added: “And the traditions the Reagans uphold will always be important to Danny.”

Blue Bloods is presently streaming on Paramount+. Boston Blue premieres on CBS October 17 at 10 p.m. ET.
