Designer of Clueless Fashion Discusses Style and More (Exclusive)
Who could forget the iconic plaid skirts, knee-high socks, and perfectly styled ensembles that turned Clueless into a fashion phenomenon?
The mastermind behind these legendary looks — costume designer Mona May — shared exclusive insights with Us Weekly about her forthcoming coffee table book, The Fashion of Clueless. The book offers a delightful exploration of the unforgettable outfits that established the 1995 film as a pop culture icon and a style guide that still resonates today.
“I design with women in mind, always thinking about their bodies,” May told Us, emphasizing her thoughtful approach to each outfit. “I consider what truly complements us; after all, we are complex beings.”
She noted that “timeless classics like A-line skirts, cap sleeves, twin sets, peacoats, berets, over-the-knee socks, and the little black dress” are quintessential pieces.
When asked about the enduring appeal of the film’s fashion, May explained that when conceptualizing the looks for stars like Alicia Silverstone (Cher Horowitz), Stacey Dash (Dionne Davenport), and the late Brittany Murphy (Tai Frasier), it was really about creating “feminine” and stylish outfits.
The book promises to include exclusive behind-the-scenes images, captivating narratives, and intimate conversations with the cast and crew, revealing how the wardrobes of Cher, Dionne, and Tai came to symbolize an entire generation.
May also conducted extensive research before accepting her role as costume designer, sharing with Us that she drew inspiration from the fashion runways of Milan and Paris, expertly adapting those styles for Beverly Hills’ high school setting.
May explains how characters often undergo a “transformation,” discovering their authentic selves, and she aimed to reflect this evolution through their outfits. (In Clueless, Cher and Dionne famously give Tai a complete makeover, guiding her from novice to a self-assured fashionista, even as Tai ultimately carves out her own unique style).
She recounted that the film’s most memorable outfit — Cher’s yellow plaid ensemble — came about after Silverstone tried on a lovely blue outfit that simply didn’t have the same impact.
“When she put on the yellow dress, it was breathtaking, perfect for the reigning queen of the school, a true ray of sunshine,” May shared with Us. “I love working with color in films; it adds so much energy… The vibe was just right.”
May speculated that Cher and Dionne would frequently call each other in the mornings to discuss their outfits.
“You can’t help but think of Clueless when you see yellow plaid,” she said, noting that the book cover reflects this signature style. “It’s almost synonymous.”
According to her, Cher had 63 outfit changes, Dionne had about 45, and Tai had around 30 to 35.
Fans will be excited to explore new images throughout the book, with May revealing to Us that “the coolest aspect is the costume continuity Polaroids,” which were taken “before computers” and “before cell phones.”

“We uncovered a plethora of Polaroids of Brittany Murphy,” she remarked, assuring that readers will relish the chance to revisit those cherished fashion moments tied to their favorite characters. “They’re simply adored.”
May also hinted at the final chapter of the book, which imagines what the characters would be up to today.
In terms of style, “I envision Cher remaining very classic and, as always, somewhat preppy,” May shared with Us, speculating that she would lean towards sustainable and elegantly tailored pieces for both comfort and style.
“My motto for all my films is to convey that confidence can come from small adjustments, and it doesn’t have to come at a high cost,” she elaborated.
May delves deeper into her craft in the book, indicating that Clueless fans will thoroughly enjoy browsing through its pages.
“I believe it’s a keepsake that people can cherish and share with friends,” May expressed excitement about her upcoming release. “It’s playful, artistic, inspiring, and undeniably adorable.”
The Fashion of Clueless is set to launch on Tuesday, October 28.
